OVERVIEW OF MATERIALS

MATERIALS

Materials are made up of matter.

V Matter maybe in the form of solid, liquid and gas.

ENGINEERING MATERIALS

• Materials that are used as raw material for any

engineering
application are known as Engineering Materials.
METALS
✓ Good conductor of heat and electricity.
V Example: copper

NON - METALS
✓ Poor conductor of heat and electricity.
V Example: plastics
FERROUS
✓ With iron

V Example: Steel & cast iron

NON FERROUS
✓ Without iron
V Example: Aluminium & Titanium
THERMOPLASTICS
✓ Can be reused

V Example: Polyethylene terephthalate [PET]

THERMOSETS
✓ Cannot be reused

V Example: Epoxy [EP]

CERAMICS
V Withstand high temperature
Example:
1. Aluminium oxide Al2O3
2. Silicon carbide Sic
ALLOYS
V Mixture of two or more elements
V Major portion - solvent
V Minor portion - solute
• Atleast one metal
✓ Homogeneous mixture
V Isotropy in nature
V Identical property at all the points
COMPOSITES
V Mixture of two or more elements
V Major portion - matrix
Minor portion -
reinforcement
V Not necessary
Heterogeneous mixture
V Anisotropy in nature
V Property will differ based on the loading conditions
✓ Tailoring the property
