Campus Journalism: An Avenue to Foster the Culture of Truth and Media Literacy

The revolution has drastically emerged in various facets of society, it greatly
engulfed the platforms covering different concerns. One of the tackled issues particularly
dealing with public secondary schools in the concrete and effective practice of journalism
through campus journalism contests and school publications. This vision was supported
by R.A. 7079 also known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 an act providing for the
development and promotion of campus journalism and for their purposes.

Preparing students academically and skill-based were considered an essential
development in educational sectors upon traversing the 21st-century education. Learners
are not only equipped with variety of theories encapsulated in the learning materials and
not only confined in the mandates of curriculum guides in every learning area. Likewise,
competencies in writing and oral reading will not suffice the emerging demands of society.
At a young age, they need to be exposed and must embrace the culture of identifying truth
in every news and must be literate enough to easily maneuver the terrain of media
practices.

As the school is promoting the value of campus journalism and how it may affect
the perspective of aspiring campus journalists, the initiation to launch a quarterly
publication of online digital newsletter was deemed to be the path for the student-writers
and teacher-coaches to continue the purpose of journalism despite the temporary
cancellation of contests due to infestation of COVID19 virus. School newspaper provides a
platform for students to express their ideas and creativity. It helps to develop their critical
thinking skills. Moreover, it can be instrumental in building peer-to-peer relationships,
while shaping their perspectives, opinion, and identity.

Learners of today are explicitly evocative in terms of their rights to express
themselves either via speaking or writing and forming a mentality of truth and just inside
and outside of the school. In line with the current target of DepEd’s Sulong EDUkalidad,
all educational institution aims to produce students who are competent holistically and
are equipped with the necessary skills to continuously seek innovative and creative
outputs in academic, skill, career, and media practices.
