Background and
purpose
Background

Food industry wastewater characterized Primary treatment can only reduce the To optimize removal efficiency, it is necessary
by having high significant BOD, COD, and content of floating materials or materials to combine secondary treatment with tertiary
TSS concentrations (including oils and that can be deposited by gravity, which are (advanced) treatment. One process that has a
grease) ineffective to reduce suspended and strong ability to oxidize organic compounds is
dissolved forms. ozonation

Research
Purpose
To assess the performance of the food
industry WWTPs with a combination of
anaerobic, aerobic, and ozonation methods,
then compare the processing results with
environmental quality standards.
Methodology
This research was conducted in WWTP of a meat processing
industry in Lembang District, West Bandung Regency, West Java
Province, Indonesia.

Assessing The performance of WWTP by comparing the results of

the laboratory effluent from the factory before and after
processing.

Methodology Comparing the laboratory effluent results of the anaerobic,

aerobic, and ozonation methods with other food industry WWTP
methods.

Checking the suitability of the processing results (effluent) with

the wastewater quality standard in accordance with the
regulation of the Indonesia Minister of the Environment Number
(No). 5 of 2014

methods
Preliminary dan primary treatment

Wastewater from the food industry activities is first accommodated in the equalization tank

After being accommodated in the equalization tank, the wastewater will be injected with a pH adjustment solution.

To adjust the pH value, it is necessary to provide a pH adjustment agent. The solution used in the step
was a solution of sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3)
Secondary treatment

Preliminary and primary treatment stages can only reduce the content of floating materials that can be deposited by gravity.
Most of the food industry wastewater pollutants are suspended and dissolved which are relatively unaffected by the
primary treatment.
To remove or reduce the content of suspended or dissolved pollutants, secondary treatment is required by biological
processes both aerobic or anaerobic
Tertiary (advanced) treatment

To improve the quality of the effluent, additional treatment is needed.

Tertiary (advanced) wastewater treatment is effective to reduce/eliminate the concentration of BOD, TSS and nutrients.

The tertiary treatment used in this WWTP is ozonation process. Ozonation has multiple benefits including:
a)ozone is very effective at working as a strong oxidizing agent and as a disinfectant because it leaves no residue
b)being able to accelerate the oxidation process so that pollutants in water will be oxidized faster and easier to be deposited or
filtered;
c)Increase dissolved oxygen (DO) in water and clean water from micro-organisms, especially those that are pathogenic;
d)Ozone can also reduce and even eliminate unpleasant odors in water
Filtration

The filtration media used in WWTP are zeolite and activated carbon

The wastewater that has passed through the filter is then channeled into a pipe to the drainage channel.

Conclussion
Conclussion
WWTP of the food industry by combining anaerobic, aerobic, and
ozone methods have a high-efficiency value in treating food
industry wastewater. The efficiency is 89% for BOD removal, 97%
for COD removal, and 100% for TSS removal.

These parameters have met the environmental quality standards

according to the regulation of the Indonesia minister of the
environment number (No). 5 of 2014

It can also be concluded that the combined anaerobic, aerobic, and

ozonation WWTP has an excellent removal result when compared
to other methods.
