India 2000 years ago

A Compilation of threads

Today, we compile our past threads on diverse

topics such as urban planning and agriculture in
Mauryan times, the origins of Yoga, Diwali, the
history of paper, etc.
1. The story of Lake Sudarshan -

Emperor Chandragupta Maurya constructed an

irrigation lake 2300 years ago. It irrigated
Junagadh (Gujarat) region for almost 800 years.

Later, Emperor Ashoka, King Rudradaman, &

Emperor Skandagupta all repaired it.

2. Did you know that the Mauryan administration

classified lands for agriculture and revenue
purposes and even suggested what to harvest in
each category?

3. Diwali is the living tradition of joy. It has a great

place of importance in most Indian religious
traditions.

The history of Diwali goes back more than 2000

years. This thread enlists the 5 oldest references of
Diwali.
4. The discovery of the inscriptions of Samrat
Ashoka unlocked several aspects of Indian history
which were forgotten for a while.

This thread compiles the 14 edicts of Ashoka.

P.S. The Pique in the title should read Peek.

5. Paper is an underrated catalyst of human

evolution. What is even more underrated is the
history of Paper in India.

6. The history and origins of Yoga

In the first century CE, the first known logical

compilation of Yoga - Patanjali's Yoga Sutra - had
come into existence. The practice and the
philosophy go back much further.
The reason to compile these threads is to collect
diverse glimpses of the Indian society 2000 years
ago.

As we celebrate 75 years of independence in 10

days, we are trying to gather traces of what has
made us who we are as India.
