Message from the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor

Museums are institutions created in the public interest. They engage
their visitors, foster deeper understanding and promote the enjoyment
and sharing of authentic cultural and natural heritage. Museums
acquire, preserve, research, interpret and exhibit the tangible and
intangible evidence of society and nature. The traditional role of
museums is to collect objects and materials of cultural, religious and
historical importance, preserve them, research into them and present
them to the public for the purpose of education and enjoyment.
North Bengal University Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum is an exemplary
institute that preserve objects of ancient past to weapons of the earliest warrior community.
This museum cares for the ethnographically identified artefacts of tribes. It also conserves the
coins and manuscript from the earliest period to modern era. The museum serves as one of the
greatest pool of knowledge for the researchers, teachers, students and all the noble souls who
love to know their ancient tradition, legacy and heritage. I am really glad to announce that
NBUAKMH Museum is going to publish calendar for the year 2022. So, in this auspicious
occasion I wish this New Year brings you all happiness and good health. Wish you all a very

Message from the Director

The long 56 years of journey of NBU AKMH Museum has imprinted a remarkable place in the
history of north Bengal University and North Bengal as well. Having been set up in 1965 with few
artifacts of the distant past has become a rich repository of the collection in sculptures, paintings,
manuscripts, coins, terracotta, and many other artifacts depicting the history of North Bengal.
The primary objective of the museum is to display the glorious past of North Bengal with the help
of archeological and historical evidence. This museum has become the center of attraction for the
researcher, general public, student, and tourist too. We hope that the NBU AKMH Museum with
careful documentation and preservation of artifacts will rise to prominence and claim its due share
as part of National History.
We sincerely believe that the NBU AKMH Museum with its rich cultural and antique collection
from the region will cater the channel between the distant past and the technologically loaded future.
We wish you a very happy and healthy New Year 2022.

However, only in February 1965 was it partially opened for
inquisitive public exclusively, those who were genuinely interested
in some kind of historical research. It was opened to general public
only on 28th December, 2006 when it was shifted to new building
and formally inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of West
Bengal.
The Museum has become the repository of the culture of the

people of the northern districts of West Bengal. It is the most useful
representative of the profiting. It generates a sense of belongingness
among the people of this region. The museum aims at becoming
