DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL RUBY PARK KOLKATA

SESSION: 2021-2022
SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS
CLASS – VI
TOPIC: KNOWING OUR NUMBERS
Adding 1 to the greatest 4- digit number (9,999), we get the smallest 5-digit number (10,000);
adding 1 to the greatest 5-digit number (99,999); we get the smallest 6-digit number
(1,00,000); and so on.
Out of the numbers, the one having more digits is greater.
If two numbers have the same number of digits, we compare them by extreme left digits. In
case, they are also the same, we compare them by they are next digits to the right and so on.
In Indian system of numeration, the periods are crores, lakhs, thousands and units; while in
international system of numeration, these are millions, thousands and units.
1km = 1,000 mile = 1,00,000 cm = 10,00,000 mm
1 kg = 1,000 g = 10,00,000 mg
1 kl = 1,000 litre = 10,00,000 ml
1 year = 365 days = 8,760 hours = 5,25,600 minutes
For rounding off a number to the nearest
(i) 10, we look at the ones digit
(ii) 100, we look at the tens digit
(iii) 1,000 we look at the hundred digit, and so on.
If the digit at the ones, tens or hundreds place is less than 5, the number is rounded off
downwards; otherwise upwards.
Seven basic symbol in Roman Numeration System are I(1), V(5), X(10), L(50), C (100),
D(500) and M(1000).
The following rules are used to from Roman Numerals :
(i) A string of symbols means that their values are added together.
(ii) If symbols of a smaller value is placed before a symbol of a greater value, we
subtract instead of adding.
(iii) V, L and D are neither repeated nor written to the left of greater value symbol.
(iv) I can be written to the left of V and X only.
(v) X can be written to the left of L and C only.
(vi) I and X can be repeated at the most three times.
