Starting a GNSS RTK Base & Rover Survey

This guide describes starting a base in OS National Grid, but the procedure is similar
if any other National Coordinate system or Local Grid is used. An R6/R8 receiver is
assumed but other Trimble receivers are started in the same way.
This guide assumes a correct RTK or RTK and Logging Survey style has been
created. If you have queries about this contact Survey Solutions Support.

BASE GNSS RECEIVER SETUP

1) Set up the base receiver over the base point.

From the Main Access Screen first choose General Survey – this will open the screen
on the right below.

To start a new Job Choose Jobs/New job and select the settings shown below:

If you need to choose an alternative Coord

system, tap the Coord sys box and choose
'Select from library'.
Select the appropriate system and Geoid
model.

Tap Enter and Accept.

2) On the Controller long press the Trimble Button and select Base Mode as
shown below. After a few Seconds the Controller will connect to the Base
station. Press Escape to exit the GNSS Functions.

Starting a GNSS RTK Base & Rover Survey

STARTING THE BASE STATION

From the General Survey menu in the Controller:
1) Select Measure/RTK/Start Base Receiver.
2) Type in the Station Name you are set up over. If the you have no co-ordinates
for the station then hit the arrow to the right of the Name box and choose Key
In and then Here (bottom of screen).
Note : This will give an AUTONOMOUS base position which will have to be
corrected. 'Here' should be used with RTK and Logging survey styles.
3) If you know the co-ordinates type them in (they must be appropriate for the
selected coord sys.). If you have already surveyed the station from another
base station in this job the co-ordinates will be recognised automatically when
you key in the point name..

4) Key in the Antenna Height and choose where you measured to, e.g. Centre of
Bumper.
5) Leave station index as is and Transmit delay at 0.
6) Enter and then Start.
7) Disconnect Controller from the Base Station (i.e. select the rover mode).

The lights on the receiver should be as follows:

Satellite LED should be flashing Orange
If you are logging data to the R6/R8 receiver then the battery light should give an
intermittent flash.
The radio light should flash.

Starting a GNSS RTK Base & Rover Survey

Starting the RTK rover survey

Start up the base receiver as described above.

1) Power up the rover receiver and then long press the Trimble Button and select
Rover Mode as shown below. After a few Seconds the controller will connect
to the GNSS Rover. Press Esc to exit the GNSS Functions once you have
connected.

2) Select Measure/RTK/Measure points

The rover will automatically start initialising, and the word ‘Float’ with standard
deviations beside it will appear in the bottom of the screen indicating that the Rover is
initialising.. Do not measure any points until ‘Fixed’ appears at the bottom of the
screen. This indicates that a RTK solution has been calculated. Accuracies are stated.

Measuring points

1. Enter Point name to start from.

This is basically a counter for your
points. The number will increment
automatically every time you store
a point.
2. Enter code if required
3. Generally the Method would be
Rapid point for soft detail, Topo
point for Hard detail and Observed
Control Point for Control Stations.
Configure the relevant tolerances
in the survey style.
4. The Target height should be entered.
5. Click Measure to measure and Store a point. Auto store should be checked in
the Survey Style.
6. “Observation Stored” will appear at the bottom of the screen and point number
will increment.

SHUTTING DOWN THE ROVER ECEIVER

From the main menu select the Measure icon in the main menu, chose End GNSS
Survey. Choose to power down the receiver.
Go to measure again and end the base survey.
Power off the Controller.
