Preface

Art appreciation is the ability to look at a work of art and understand how the artist
used the elements of art and principles of design. Knowledge and understanding of the
universal and timeless qualities of art also means that one can identify what a great art
is. The art of different forms, mediums, styles, and techniques are better understood
when it is being appreciated.
The elements of art are the building blocks used to create the work and the principles
of design are the ways the building blocks are used. To write about art appreciation, it
is important to know the vocabulary, or language, of art. The Elements and Principles
of Art are the foundation of every artwork, but teaching them can be a bore. Thus, this
book was crafted in such a way that students will find it interesting that it will wake
them up and engage them with full color artworks, easy to understand definitions, and
thought-provoking higher level thinking questions.
This book are divided into 4 chapters which are follows:
Chapter 1 (Art and Nature of Art) presents the basic elements of art and is mainly
focused in the discussion of line as one of the most important Elements of Art. In this
chapter, students will have to think about how important a role line plays in
the creation
process. Lines can communicate an idea or express a feeling. They can appear static or
active. Lines define objects. We will take a look at how artists use line expressively.
Chapter 2 (Basic Principles, Subjects, and Methods of Arts) presents the principles of
art that boost visual literacy. Artists and creators make more powerful works when
they utilize the principles of art. When viewers are familiar with the principles of art,
they become more aware of the details and can better appreciate what they see and the
message behind it. This chapter also presents the subjects and methods of art, which is
relevant in understanding specific artwork.
Chapter 3 (The Visual and Plastic Arts) presents that an artistic medium refers to the
type of material used to create a work of art, be it paintings, sculptures and everything
in between.  When you visit  art museums, you will likely encounter paintings  with a
small display card stating the title of the painting, the artist’s name and the medium
used to make that painting or sculpture. The term medium was first used specifically
in the context of art 90 years after Lessing mentioned it in an essay in 1861. Earlier,
art was described in terms of the substance mixed with each pigment to make paint.
For example, oil and water are different mediums into which paint is mixed to make
pigment. Now, the term “medium” is used to convey what material art is made of.
Chapter 4 (The Performing Arts) presents that the performing arts refer to the forms of
art where an artist uses his own face, body and presence. The major types of performing
arts include music, opera, dance, drama, and spoken words. Music can be sorted into
different genres or subgenres, although the divisions of these genres are usually vague
and subtle. It is also said that there is a very strong connection between mathematics
and music. To a lot of people who belong to various cultures, music plays an important
part in their lives. Music is usually associated with the way of life of different kinds of
people across the land.
