Hazardous Waste Management Rules

The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016  were
established under the provision of the Environment Protection Act.

WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE?

Section 3(17) of the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement)
Rules, 2016 define what hazardous wastes are. In simple words, hazardous waste means any waste
that is characteristically dangerous to health or the environment.

SOMME IMPORTANT PROVISIONS OF THE ACTS ARE:

Sec 4 deals with Responsibilities of the occupier for management of hazardous and other wastes

(a) prevention;

(b) minimization;

(c) reuse,

(d) recycling;

(e) recovery, utilisation including co-processing;

(f) safe disposal.
