Basic Concepts in Cultural Globalization

1. Cultural Imperialism

In simple words, this concept pertains to domination or the rising presence and influence of
certain dominant cultures taking over the less known cultures around the world. One concrete
example is the domination of the cultural products of some renowned multinational corporations
such as McDonald's, Nike, Samsung, etc.

2. Cultural Hybridity

From the word itself, cultural hybridity refers to the mixture or combination of one or more
wide global cultures into the host or local culture resulting in the emergence of something new or
more complex culture. Thus, it is a powerful tool for liberation as a part of local culture is still
being present.

3. Cultural Globalization

Cultural Globalization is a phenomenon wherein it intensifies intercultural relations among

various nations and impacts cultural flow by the means of dissemination or transmission of ideas,
beliefs, symbols, meanings, and products through a global scale.

4. Global Mono-Culture or Homogeneous Culture

This concept pertains to the aim of unifying different cultures, nations, and backgrounds
forming a fixed and uniform culture, thus, diminishing the existence of cultural diversity and
cultural identity.

5. “The medium is the message”

This phrase implies that the medium has the same level of importance compared to the
message itself. Thus, the form of the medium being used has a significant effect on how the
message is conveyed and perceived.
