Research problem

A study on awareness and effective utilization of ‘employees state insurance’ benefits in


employees with reference in Thrissur district.
Introduction:
The Employee State Insurance (ESI) appears in 1948 and it was the first major legislation for
security in India. Employees’ state Insurance Corporation of India is a multidimensional social
system to provide benefits and socio-economic protection to worker population and providing
coverage for their family under scheme. The Success Of Organization Depends Upon
the Strength Of Human Resources. Without Positive and Whole Hearted
Contributions From People Organizations Cannot Achieve Anything. In Order
To Achieve The Goals Or Activities Of Organization, They Can Maintain
Good Relations With Them. It’s The Time That Organizations Recognize
That Valuing Their Employees as Assets Should Be Realized in a Full-
Fledged Manner. The Employee’s (Their Knowledge Expertise, Abilities, Skill
Sets and Experience) Are the Invaluable and Intangible assets in Securing
the Future.

The Esi Scheme Is Financed by the Contributions From employees and


employers. The Employees ‘Contribution Is 4.75% of the Wages Payable to
Employees. The Employee’s Contribution is at the Rate Of 1.75% Of the
Wages Payable to An Employee with Effective From 1.1.97. The Scheme
Is Jointly Is Administrated By the Central and State Governments. While
The Central Government Formulates The Schemes, Recovers The Contribution
From Employers Of Covered Establishments Through Its Recovery Offices,
Builds The Infrastructure (Hospitals, Dispensaries Etc.) Provides Seven –Eighth
Of The Total Expenses, The State Government Contributes The One Eighth
Post Medical Officers, Specialists And Paramedical Staff, Procures And Installs
Equipment, Dispenses Medicines And Has The Overall Responsibility For
Management Of Hospitals And Dispensaries. The Director –General (Dg)
Employees ‘State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Is the Chief Executive Officer
Of The Corporation And Functions Under The Overall Supervision And
Control Of The Board And Committees/Council Formed There Under.
Employee State Insurance is an important for the people who are in working environment. Many
people cannot get proper induction to know about the benefits and awareness about ESI benefits.
Employee State Insurance is providing useful benefits to the employees, which includes Medical
benefit, Sickness benefit, Maternity Benefit, Funeral Benefit etc. This study is to analyze if people
can avail the benefit and to improve the awareness among them
Statement of Problem:

Employees State Insurance Play a Leading Role Providing Health Care


Benefits and Other Cash Benefits In Case Of Maternity, Sickness And
Employment Injury. This Study Focus On Knowing the Awareness and
Effective Utilization of Employees State Insurance Benefits with Special
Reference to Thrissur City

Objectives of the study


Primary objective
• To Study The Awareness And Utilization Of ESI Benefits Among Employees

Secondary objective
• To Study The Satisfaction Level Of Employees For The Benefits Enjoyed From ESI
Scope of the study
The main scope of this study knows the awareness and effective utilization of ESI benefits towards
the employees. It also studies the awareness of ESI benefits among the employees. The study
should also focus on satisfaction level of employees towards the ESI benefits.
Research methodology
The study of descriptive research design which helps to know about the awareness and utilization
of ESI benefits in employee based on secondary and primary data.
Research design
In this study researcher uses Descriptive research method, primarily focuses on describing the
awareness and the satisfaction level of employees state insurance.
Population
The population of the study is the employees in Thrissur district. The population is infinite.
Sampling
The population in infinite the researcher uses non probability sampling. From non probability
sampling, convenience is taken.
Sample size
The sample size consists of 50 people from Thrissur district.
Tools for data collection
Primary data
The tools used for data collection are questionnaires circulated in what’s App groups created using
Google forms.

Of The Study Were On Regulatory Frame Work, Allowances And Schemes Of Esi. The Study
Disclosed That The Employees Have Positive Impact Towards Esi Scheme And It Also Provides
Social Security To Lives Of Employees

G. Muthulakshmi (2014) conducted a Study on the Performance of Employee’s State Insurance


Scheme with Special Reference to Tuticori District, Tamilnadu. The Study Scrutinizes The
Performance Of ESI Hospitals. The Study Found That ESI Dispensaries /Hospitals Were Not
Functioning Up To The Satisfaction Of Insured Persons. The Study Also Reveals The Scope To
Improve Its Functions And Turn Into A Highly Trustful A Reliable Corporation, Implementing
Better Services

Insurance (E.S.I) The Main Focus Of Study Were On Overall Working Of The Scheme And
Utilization Of Benefits Provided By Scheme

S. Mini (2010) Did A Doctoral Study On Social Security Of Labor In New Indian Economy. The
Study Analyzed The New Challenges Stemming Up In Employment Relation, Efficacy Of The
Existing Measures Of Labor In The Present Economic Condition And Suggestions For Securing
Workers Right To Social Security In The Trade Regime.

Valsamma Paul (1995), in her study, suggested that the ESI Act, 1948 and the Rules may be
amended, binding the employers to provide the employees with necessary information about the
employment injury benefits available under the ESI Act, 1948 and the formalities for obtaining
the same. This will help the illiterate employees, especially the casual ones avail of employment
injury benefits. She also suggested that administration of medical benefit should be undertaken by
the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation from the State Government.
S.K. Sharma (1997), former director General of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation,
pointed out that the ESI Corporation of India, dedicated to extension of social security benefits to
a specific segment of worker class has the potential, expertise and a massive broad based
infrastructure that still remain unexploited and underutilized.
FINDINGS

➢ Majority of the respondents are aware about ESI benefits


➢ The majority of the respondents have an ESI card.
➢ Most of the respondents receive medical benefits under their ESI card.
➢ The majority of the respondents found out about the different ESI schemes through their
employer
➢ The majority of the respondents felt that the ESI benefits were easily available to them
➢ The majority of the respondents were satisfied with the information provides by the ESIC
about their various plans and schemes.
➢ Most of the respondents only effectively utilize the ESI benefits provided by the ESIC
sometimes due to lengthy procedures and poor infrastructure.
➢ The majority of the respondents felt that lengthy procedures for claiming benefits were
the major constraint preventing them from utilizing the ESI benefits
➢ Most of the respondents were highly satisfied with the availability of medicines at ESI
hospital due to proper stock of medicines being maintained at the hospital.
➢ Most of the respondents felt that the lack of availability of medicines and other
facilities for treatment were the major constraints while using the ESI dispensary.
➢ The majority of the respondents felt that the process for claiming the ESI benefits were
complex and involved lot of procedures.
➢ Most of the respondents prefer private hospital for medical treatment because of good
treatment and medical facilities.
➢ Most of the respondents were highly satisfied with the availability of medicines at ESI hospital
due to proper stock of medicines being maintained at the hospital.
➢ The majority of the respondents were neutral about the SUVIDHA SAMAGAM settlement
system for public grievances under the ESI.
➢ The majority of the respondents were neutral about the reimbursement medical bill under the
ESI act.
➢ Most of the respondents were of the opinion that the grievances redressal under ESIC is
partially effective
➢ The majority of the respondents were aware of the leave benefits under the ESI scheme
➢ The majority of the respondents took neutral stance regarding the overall benefits provided by
the ESIC to its beneficiaries.\

Suggestions
1) More Awareness Programs Must Be Introduced As Most Of The People Are Not
Aware Or Not Utilized The Benefits Provided By Esi

2) Procedures for Claiming the Benefits Are To Be Made Simple Only Then People Can
Access To These Benefits Easily

3) Lengthy Procedure Availing Benefits Must Be Cut Short To Make Them More
Accessible
4) Adequate Funds Must Be Provided By Government To Expand And Maintain The
Infrastructure Facilities In Esi Hospitals
