CHAPTER 5
THE FINISHING
PHASE
1. Move the ball around the opposition's defence 3. SHOT FROM OUTSIDE THE PENALTY AREA
and attack from the flanks.
2. Break through the opposition's defence with
a final pass (assist) or by dribbling forward
through the centre of the pitch.
3. Move toward the goal and shoot from outside
the penalty area. It is important that the player
has a high level of technical skill for long
distance shooting.
1. CREATING CHANCES IN
THE FINAL THIRD
* In the next section " 2. OPTIONS BLOCKED: MAINTAIN POSSESSION AND START NEW ATTACK,"
we will explain an alternative situation when the above options are blocked.
If this happens, the aim changes to playing the ball back, maintaining possession and then
starting a new attack.
Forward Plays a
1 First Time Pass
to the Winger in
Behind:
The left back's (LB)
2 closest passing
options blocked.
The forward reacts
and moves across
to provide a good
option and quickly
play in behind.
Forward Plays
2 1-2 with Winger
to Receive in the
Box:
As the red defence
is deeper and the
LW is not tightly
marked, the
previous example
wouldn't be as
effective.
The LW creates
space by checking
back to receive and
the blues just have
to play 1 more pass
to get in behind.
Forward's Lay-Off to
3 Winger Who Passes to
Opposite Winger:
As the red defence is deeper
again, the LW creates space
by checking back to receive.
In this variation, he plays
an aerial pass to the RW
in behind on the opposite
side.
Forward's Lay-Off to
4 Winger Who Passes
Inside for CM:
In this variation of the
previous example, the
RCM makes a forward run
to receive in space in the
centre - he can either shoot
from outside the penalty
area or play a through ball
in behind for a teammate
(forward or RW).
Winger's Lay-Off to CM
5 Who Passes in Behind for
Full Back:
When there is a lack of front
support options, there is
always the option of playing
back to a free player who
can then play in behind
(open ball situation).
In this example, the LB is
able to make a well timed
run in behind to receive.
Objective: Possession play, timing passes/runs in behind the defence and finishing.
Practice Description
Using half a full pitch, we mark out a large zone (1) the width of the penalty area and a small zone (2) which
is the full width of the pitch.
In zone 1, we have a 4 v 4 situation +2 yellow neutral players who play with the team in possession and act
as the centre back and forward.
There are also 2 yellow neutral wingers (LW & RW) outside the zone in the positions shown and 3 opposing
red defenders in front of the penalty area (inside zone 2).
The practice starts with the coach's pass. The blue attacking team have to:
yy Complete 8-10 passes within zone 1 with help from the neutral players. If the red defending team win
the ball, the practice continues with the team roles reversed.
yy Pass the ball to one of the neutral wingers who have to make a run in behind the 3 opposing defenders
to receive (RW in diagram example). The 3 red defenders can intercept the ball, but they are not allowed
to leave their zone. The aim is to finish the attack as quickly as possible, with players making runs to
support.
