CRICKET- AN INTRODUCTION
• Cricket is a game played between two teams, generally of 11 members each. In essence, it is
single combat, in which an individual batsman does battle against an individual bowler, who has
helpers known as fielders.
• The bowler propels the ball with a straight arm from one end of the 22-yard pitch in an attempt to
dismiss the batsman by hitting a target known as the wicket at the other end, or by inducing one
of a number of other indiscretions. The batsman attempts to defend the wicket with the bat and
to score runs - the currency of the game - by striking the ball to the field boundary, or far enough
from the fielders to allow the batsman to run to the other end of the pitch before the ball can be
returned. When all but one of the batting team have been dismissed - or after an agreed period -
the teams' roles are reversed. After all the players required to bat on both sides have done, the
total number of runs accumulated determines the winner. But sometimes there isn't one which is
termed as draw.
• There are three formats of cricket played at the international level – Test matches, One-Day
Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. These matches are played under the rules and
regulations approved by the International Cricket Council, the sports governing body.
VIRAT KOHLI
• India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as
ambitious as Virat Kohli.
• Virat kohli is an Indian top order batter who was born on November 05,1988 in
Delhi. He is an international cricketer and former captain of the Indian national
cricket team. He plays for Delhi in domestic cricket and Royal Challengers
Bangalore in the Indian Premier League as a right-handed batsman.
• He made his Test debut on 20 June 2011 against West Indies. ODI debut on 18
August 2008 against Sri Lanka. T20I debut on 12 June 2010 against Zimbabwe.
• Kohli has employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and
fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As
a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time,
making jaw-dropping chases look easy. Plenty of them.

ODI T20I TEST

TOOLS USED TO DETERMINE THE PERFORMANCE OF A BATTER

1) STRIKE RATE
• Strike rate or Batting strike rate (s/r) is defined for a batter as the
average number of runs scored per 100 balls faced. The higher
MEANING the strike rate, the more effective a batter is at scoring quickly.

• In Test cricket, a batter's strike rate is of secondary relevance to

their ability to score runs without getting out. This means a Test
batter's most important statistic is generally considered to be
TEST their batting average, rather than their strike rate.

• In limited overs cricket(ODI AND T20I), Since each team only

faces a limited number of balls in an innings, the faster a batter
ODI AND T20I scores, the more runs their team will be able to accumulate.
2) AVERAGE
Batting average is a statistic in cricket that measures the
performance of batters.

In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number

of runs they have scored divided by the number of times
they have been out.

Since the number of runs a player scores and how often

they get out are primarily measures of their own playing
ability, and largely independent of their teammates,
batting average is a good metric for an individual player's
skill as a batter.

IPL
The Indian Premier League (IPL), is a professional men's Twenty20 cricket league, contested
by ten teams based out of seven Indian cities and three Indian states. The league was
founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.

It is usually held between March and May of every year and has an exclusive window in
the ICC Future Tours Programme. The IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world
and in 2014 was ranked sixth by average attendance among all sports leagues. In 2010, the
IPL became the first sporting event in the world to be broadcast live on YouTube.

The brand value of the IPL in 2019 was ₹47,500 crore (US$5.9 billion). According to BCCI,

the 2015 IPL season contributed ₹1,150 crore (US$140 million) to the GDP of the Indian
economy. The 2020 IPL season set a massive viewership record with 31.57 million average
impressions and with an overall consumption increase of 23 per cent from the 2019
season.
