“The Notion of Climate Change and its Impacts”

Grade 10-Eduardo Quisumbing
Every community in our country is experiencing the effects of climate change.
Some threats are natural, but the majority of the threats are made by us humans. These
include pollution, loss of habitat, the spread of diseases, an increase in the population,
and many others.
A survey was conducted in the community of Barangay San Isidro. Some of the
residents complied with the said survey, and the majority of the people chose extreme
weather as the most present threat of climate change in their community.
Extreme weather has a wide range of consequences. To begin with, Paranaque's
slum and squatter neighborhoods are severely targeted in these situations since their
dwellings have weak foundations and are prone to toppling in heavy winds. Finally,
extreme weather is a nuisance to the citizens of Paranaque because they are obligated
to deal with all of these issues, including the cancellation of pre-planned events and
possibly even classes; their daily lives are being hampered because they are unable to
go outside to resume their daily routines, such as walking outside for exercise, meeting
friends, maintaining the garden, and other outdoor activities in general.
A direct face-to-face interview was also conducted regarding the threats of
climate change. When asked if he believes it is possible to reverse the effects of climate
change in his community, Chester Tan, a resident of Barangay San Isidro, said, "I do
believe that the threats of climate change can be reversed, but it will take a very long
time because some of the threats of climate change are connected in our nature and
some are also irreversible."
Many of the respondents suggested ways in which they will be able to make a
difference in the fight against climate change as environmentally conscious individuals.
It includes "I can exercise the act of helping my surroundings up to the best that I can";
and "By simply listening to what experts say and by applying what I learn into my
everyday life."; "By having advocacy and an organization of youth so that we can raise
the issue of climate change," "Be a role model and simply doing the basic steps like
reuse, reduce, recycle."; and lastly, "In a way, I can be able to make a difference by
doing simple things like deleting unwanted emails, not wasting food, not using single-
use plastic, conserving water and electricity, etc." All of this may be just a small act, but
if we apply it every day, we might still have a few years to stop climate change.
The threats of climate change will still pile up and appear in many other places.
The only way people will be able to fight off these threats is to get help from people who
have the power to solve or lessen this problem, and also by being considerate enough
to the other people living in their own community too.
