Workshop Facilitation

with Britt Andreatta

Extending the Learning

Below are ways to extend the learning beyond the workshop. This strategy is a vital part of blended
learning and creating a flipped classroom, but it can work for any type of workshop or topic.

1. Provide a list of relevant or related materials.

This can include articles, books, chapters, videos, websites, and online courses, for example. Ask people to
pick something from the list that interests them, and commit to doing it in the next two weeks. See the next
page for some extended learning opportunities for you.

2. Set up opportunities to practice.

Give your participants specific activities to do to when they return to their regular environments. Options
include a set of worksheets to complete, online assessments to submit, or a behavior to repeat a certain
number of times. Consider having them schedule appointments on their calendar.

3. Empower shared learning in pairs or groups

Encourage people to meet in pairs or groups for discussions or practice work. This can include online
interactions as well as face-to-face meetings.

4. Hold your learners accountable to finish their work.

Communicate how, when, and where participants should submit any final work. Identify clear deadlines, and if
possible, provide reminders.
