GOLD SEARCH SEASON ONE

The Gold Search is a programme aimed at creating a platform to discover hidden talents at their infant
and untapped stages, manage, groom and nurture them into skills while improving standards of
education, encouraging hard work and offer support if need be. It is completely educational with a bit of
entertainments from extracurricular activities to keep the whole experience worthwhile and lively.

Origin

The Programme draws its origin and relevance from the need to discover hidden talents embedded in
children, mostly children between the ages of 10years to 18years which is often difficult due to the state
of the economy and other pending factors which include; Poor background and absence of a platform to
showcase and be discovered, among others. These ages are usually found in high schools. The originator
of this programme is Unit 5 Entertainment, a subsidiary of Unit 5 Associates. Unit 5 Associates is a multi-
merchandise company that has entertainment as one of its component, thus, "Unit 5 Entertainment".

The programme lays its emphasis on supporting the educational curriculum for a growing Nigerian child
between the ages of 10 to 18years. Its core focus is the reactivations of high school clubs, reigniting the
competitive spirit between schools which will further aid in the personal development of individual skills
in the course of inter-school competitions. This program will help secure young promising talents and
safeguard them from dying-off because the necessary platform to be discovered and nurtured into a
skilled individuals that may become entrepreneurs (employers of labour). The programme will run
across each and every high school in Akwa Ibom state irrespective of nature of ownership, distance or
location.

During these inter-school interactions through competitions of the various clubs, every school will strive
to be better, see what they’re lacking in terms of competent staff, facilities, well diagnosed curriculum
etc. Through this programme, parents will see how their wards perform in school, how the school their
wards attend can improve in terms of standards, Staff, etc as we will be investing much in media
publicity as we intend to discover and showoff hidden talents in these minors during the course of every
project in this programme.

The various projects includes: inter-school football tournament, quiz, debates, spoken word
competitions, essays, spelling competitions, science fair, scholarship examinations, chess and scrabble
competitions, cooking competitions and lots more. Where winners from the different categories will be
awarded various prizes for their hard work as individuals, as a team and as a school.

Significance

Given the current state of the nation, the timing of this initiative is perfect as students round the nation
lose hope in the Public Tertiary Institutions on a daily basis due to the continuous industrial actions
carried out by different unions in these institutions and seek other means of developing themselves as
other private institutions are only affordable to few. The programme seeks to provide an alternative by
creating a platform where these young promising talents can be discovered at their infant stage before
being subjected to a system that doesn’t support their individual growth and if possible, be granted
scholarships by these institutions that would have been unaffordable in a different situation. This
programme seeks to by-pass financial capacity, location, tribalism and nepotism to bring out the best in
every student through competitive spirit and encourage hard work .This programme will encourage
parents in even rural areas to send their children to school no matter the school as it (the programme)
will not discriminate against any school but give them all equal chances at being discovered. It is a
known fact that inter-school competition better prepares students for the battle in the labour market,
where different standards are put to test to see which is best or most preferable. This will in turn
motivate the schools to either up their standards or maintain it. This is ultimately in the benefit of the
students. This programme will investigate and expose the state of schools in both rural and urban areas
in terms of infrastructure, learning environment, etc and seek external intervention in our own ways to
enable us secure the future of these students as we will be visiting each and every school in the course
of the programme. All things being equal, the Gold Search initiative should change the narrative from
the grass root level.

Modus operandi

As earlier stated, this programme will achieve its goal by reactivating the clubs in every high school in
Akwa Ibom state. Reasons being that each school will be competing through their clubs thereby
subjecting each student to find their passion and belong to a club through which they can be discovered
in the course of this programme. These clubs include: Science club, Maths club, Red Cross, Music club,
Fine arts/Poetry club, Home Economics club, Chess and Scrabble club, Press/Debates club, Sports club,
Drama/Dance club.

The initial purpose of establishing these clubs in secondary schools was to enable students of each
school have a fair chance at discovering their talents/passion early so as to know what to venture into in
the Tertiary Institutions. These clubs lost essence and became dormant as there has been an absence of
a platform to keep them active. This has in turn had a trickledown effect on the general population as
late discovery causes students to venture into the wrong fields, graduate with no passion or love for
their discipline and end up unemployed. Others discover their dreams after years spent in the wrong
departments in Tertiary Institutions and find it extremely difficult adjusting to what they actually have
passion for, while some never do.

Unit 5 Associates through Unit 5 Entertainments, seeks to revitalize all those clubs by creating a platform
called "Gold Search" where every club has a chance to compete every academic year and young
promising talents can be spotted, appreciated and nurtured to grow into skills if need be. This is a way to
encourage the entrepreneurship spirit, and if carried out consistently, it can solve a lot of
unemployment problems in the near future. By way of support, the program may offer provisional
scholarships to some extra ordinary talents discovered through her sponsors and partners through the
course of this programme.

This programme will be split into the four quarters of the year to achieve ease in execution and
thorough focus on each project, where it will obey the high school calendar during the cause of its
execution. During these periods, professional brands who specialize in some areas will be contacted just
as there will be a series of endorsements from the state government and other relevant organizations.

Unit 5 will reach out to every high school in Akwa Ibom state to notify them through our letters on the
reactivation of these clubs and further advise each school to start up a club if it had never existed to
create room to groom any of such talents to compete and be discovered. Communications will not cease
as we will follow up through emails and phone calls to make sure each school gives her pupils the
opportunity to be seen and heard. After all schools have been duly notified, Unit 5 will then begin her
series of projects with clubs that can easily be found in schools and keep notifying each and every school
to keep activating each club in preparation to compete when the time comes.

As these notifications take place, Unit 5 will begin an intensive online and offline publicity tour to make
sure the public begins to anticipate the series of events. Unit 5 will feed various media platforms with
these events as contents and will not hold back on any form of publicity. The programme will own social
media handles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tiktok. It will equally own a YouTube channel and
WhatsApp TV. The essence of the intensive publicity is to make sure the world sees all these hidden
talents during the course of this programme and relevant authorities get to do their part in supporting
the nurturing and growth of these talents into skills. All data concerning this will be kept in both hard
copy and soft copy on its website for easy access to these individuals. This programme is of a hundred
percent educational value to the attendees, competitors and viewers.

CLUBS AND THEIR RELEVANCE IN EDUCATION

Science Club: The relevance of a science club in any secondary school cannot be over emphasized. The
club stands in to make learning interesting for pupils who develop early interest in science related
courses. It helps update these young stars on the trends in the scientific world and better prepare them
on where to channel their thoughts and efforts in the years to come, in terms of inventions and
innovations or improvements on already existing inventions to make the world a better place.

Math Club: A math club originally was for those who had developed early interest in math and were
seen to be different from their peers in math related fields. The essence of the club was to nurture these
young minds while introducing them to other math problems that are equally useful but may not be part
of their curriculum, to keep their brains active and aware at all times. Over the years, the math club
developed a new relevance as it helped students who originally had phobia for numbers gain confidence
at their early stages as we really cannot do without math in the world.

Music Club; the music club as the name implies is for students who develop early interest for music,
either for composing through writing, playing instruments or singing. It helps nurture talented musicians
into skilled musicians. This skill becomes monetized and serves as a source of income. In most cases the
music club teaches students basics on how to be team players as a choir needs good team players to
make good music.

Fine arts/Poetry Club: Scientific studies shows that art is necessary for child development.
Developmental stages of children from infancy to adolescent all happens with traces of art. Studies
show that art contributes to the development of the mind, children who practice art from a young age,
grow to be smarter than those who do not. Growing children at infant stages start doodling, then
scribbling till they get to the schematic stage where they create visual expressions using symbols, this
sums up to creativity which is the bridge between two people. The essence of this club in secondary
schools was to aid in this process and guide young talents through it. While the poetry club has
similarities with it, poetry involves more of oral engagements.

Home Economics Club: The essence of this club was to further emphasize on the need to know basic
home economics. Its importance cannot be over emphasized as a working home contributes to a
working society. Here, household ethics are taught and practiced for the betterment of the society.

Chess and Scrabble Club: Those familiar with these board games will attest to the fact that they actually
contribute to a person’s mental capacity growth, chess helps a person think smart and make drastic yet
logical moves to arrive at a conclusion. Scrabble on the other hand helps to improve the players
vocabulary as it involves continuous creation of English words till the end of the game.

Press and Debates club: For students who develop early interest in journalism or public speaking its
always advisable to be part of a press and debate club as these clubs will keep updating them on the
trends in the journalism and public speaking world. It also helps groom young talents into skills in these
fields.

Sports Club: Every school must have a sports club to serve as the comic relief after a long academic year.
In most cases the sports club helps groom those who take keen interest in athletics and other sporting
activities. These young talents if discovered and groomed end up starting a career in sports.

Dance and Drama Club: These clubs were introduced to coach students with unique talents in
entertainments. These students who find themselves in these clubs often end up as thespians and build
a career in entertainments. These clubs also help members build confidence and learn how to be team
players. It helps them view the world from different perspectives as they get to play roles that are often
far from their personalities as individuals.

These clubs and others were all initiatives at their inception to aid in growth of the students who were
members respectively. Over the years they lost their values and significance as schools could easily
boycott having them function properly for the growth of the students. This program will reactivate those
clubs and keep them running for the period of its existence. Extracurricular activities have a major role
to play in ones development
SWOT

Strength: The strength of this programme is derived from its significance and demand. Seen or unseen,
there is a demand for an environment that pushes students at this level out of their comfort zone to
work harder in other to discover their hidden talents and nurture it into skills. There is a demand for a
programme devoted to encouraging the spirit of hard work at the secondary level of education in order
to produce students with a competitive mindset and the zeal to always want to be better. There is a
demand to share and test standards through inter-school competitions for the betterment of the
learning environment for the students and enlightenment of the schools, all of these constitute to the
strength of the programme.

Weakness: The programme faces challenges when the schools lack the means to avail themselves with
their students to compete, the absence of the clubs in the schools and competent staff to man these
clubs when established.

Opportunities: The programme will be creating an environment where students put their individual
standards to test not just with their school mates but many other schools either public, private,
missionary, etc. The programme also creates an environment where customers are easily accessible by
brands, marketing is a lot easier and sales happen from traffic converted.

Threats: As every other initiative, the programme faces a threat of acceptability.
