Answer any ONE FULL question from each unit (5  15 = 75)

UNIT – I
1. The pure water and alcohol are mixed to get a 65% (by weight) alcohol (15)
solution. The densities of water, alcohol and the solution may be
considered to be 998 kg/m3, 800 kg/m3 and 898 kg/m3 respectively at
293 K. Calculate the following:
i) The volume percentage of ethanol in the solution at 293 K
ii) The molarity
iii) The molality
2. An analysis of vent gases from the chlorinator in a plant for making (15)
chlorinated rubber showed 70% by volume HCl, 25% by volume Cl2 and
the rest is CCl4.
Estimate the following:
i) The percentage composition by weight
ii) The average molecular weight of gas
iii) The density at standard condition (kg/m3)
UNIT – II
3. Moist air contains 0.0109 kg water vapour per cubic metre of the (15)
mixture at 300 K and 101.3 kPa. Calculate the following:
i) The partial pressure of water vapour
ii) The relative saturation
iii) The absolute humidity of the air
iv) The percentage saturation
v) The temperature to which the mixture be heated so that its
percentage saturation becomes 10% . The vapour pressure of
water (in kPa) is approximated by the Antoine equation:
3800
In Ps= 16.26-
T  46.85

4. An aqueous solution at a temperature of 22.5ºC contains 21 grams of (15)

Na2 CO3 and 10 grams of Na2SO4 per 100 grams of water.
a) Calculate the composition and weight of the crystals formed by cooling
1000 grams of this solution to a temperature of 17.5ºC.
b) Repeat the calculation of part (a) to correspond to a final temperature
of 10ºC.
UNIT – III
5. A continuous fractionating column is used to regenerate solvent for use (15)
in a solvent extraction unit. The column treats 500 kmol/h of feed
containing 10 mole% ethyl alcohol and the rest water. The overhead
product is 90 mole% alcohol and the bottom product is 0.5 mole %
alcohol. The overhead is sent to the extraction unit and the bottom unit
and the bottom is wasted. What is the daily requirement of make-up
alcohol in the solvent extraction unit.
6. Propane is burned with excess air to ensure the complete combustion. If (15)
60 kg of CO2 and 20 kg of CO are obtained when propane is completely
burned with 550 kg of air calculate the following:
i) the mass of propane burn in kilograms
ii) the percentage of excess air
iii) the composition of flue gas
UNIT – IV
7. Explain in detail on the following:
a) Degree of conversion based on inlet and outlet temperature. (7)
b) Heat of combustion and formation. (8)

8. A gas confined in a cylinder is maintained at a constant pressure by (15)

means of a weight placed on the piston. The piston is frictionless. The
diameter of the piston is 100mm and mass of the piston and the weight
together is 50 kg. The atmospheric pressure is 1 bar and acceleration
due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2. Estimate the following:
i) The pressure of the gas
ii) The work done by the gas in Joules if the gas is allowed to expand
pushing up the piston and the weight by 500 mm.
UNIT – V
9. With a neat sketch, explain in detail on the energy balance over the (15)
system with chemical reactions.
10. Explain
E in detail on the unsteady state material balance for a suitable (15)
system with example.
