Answer Any Five of the following

2. A steam power plant operates on ideal Rankine Cycle. Steam Enters HP Turbine at 20
MPa, 500°C and leaving the LP Turbine as 90% dry. Considering the Condenser Pressure
as 0.005 MPa and Reheat Temperature as 500°C,
Determine i) Reheat Pressure (6)
ii) Thermal Efficiency of the plant (8)

3. A steam power plant operates on ideal Rankine cycle with one open type Feed Heater.
Steam enters the HP Turbine at 30 bar, dry saturated and is condensed at 0.04 bar. Feed
water heater operates at 2.8 bar. Neglecting Feed Pump work, calculate,
i) Cycle efficiency (10)
ii) Specific steam consumption in kW/h (4)
4. A gas turbine has a pressure ratio of 8/1 and a maximum cycle temperature of
800°C. Isentropic Efficiency of the compressor and turbine is 85 %.
Calculate i) Compressor Work (7)
ii)Power output of an Electric Generator geared with turbine (7)
when air enters the compressor at 20°C at a rate of 20 kg/s.
Take: Cp= 1.005 kJ/kgK and y = 1.4 for Compression process
Cp= 1. 11 kJ/kgK and y = 1.333 for Expansion process

5. In a reaction stage of a steam turbine the nozzle angle is 20° and absolute velocity of
steam at the inlet to the moving blades is 240m/s. The blade velocity is 210 m/s. If the
blading is designed for 50% reaction, determine:
i) the blade angle at the inlet and the exit (4)
ii) the diagram power for steam flow of 1 kg/s (5)
iii) the diagram efficiency (5)

6. In a single stage impulse turbine the isentropic enthalpy drop is 200 kJ/kg occurs in the
nozzle having efficiency of 96% and nozzle angle of 15°. The blade velocity co-efficient is
0.96 and the ratio of blade velocity to steam velocity is 0.5. The steam mass flow rate is
20kg/s and velocity of steam entering is 50m/s. Determine:
i) the blade angles at inlet and outlet if the steam enters blade smoothly
and leaves axially (10)
ii) Blade efficiency (4)

7. A vapour compression plant uses R134a gas and has suction saturation temperature of –
5°C and a condenser saturation pressure of 45°C. The vapour is dry saturated on entering
the compressor and there is no undercooling of the condensate. Compression is carried out
isentropically in two stages and a flash chamber is used at an interstage saturation
temperature of 15°C. Calculate:
i) amount of vapour bled off the flash chamber (2)
ii) the state of vapour at the inlet of the second stage of compression (2)
iii) the coefficient of performance (10)
Given for Gas R 134a:
temp p(bar) vg(m³ /kg) hf hg(kJ/kg) sf sg(kJ/kgK) h s

45°C 11.5447 0.017 162.93 319.54 1.2105 1.7028 332.87 1.7440

8. a) Sketch Air-conditioning system of a ship (Block diagram)and describe in brief,

functions of important components. (6)

b) Saturated air at 20°C at the rate of 70 m³ /min is mixed adiabatically with the outside air
which is at 35°C and 50% Relative Humidity at a rate of 30m³/min.
Assuming that mixing process occurs at a pressure of 1 atmsp, determine (8)
i) the specific humidity.
ii) The relative humidity
iii) Dry bulb temp
iv) Volume flow rate of the mixture
