Time: 02 (Two) Hours Full Marks: 50

Use single answer script

Instructions: i) Answer script should be hand written and should be written in A4 white paper.
You must submit the hard copy of this answer script to the Department when
the university reopens.
ii) You must write the following information at the top page of each answer script:

Department: Program:
Course no: Course Title:
Examination: Semester (Session):
Student ID: Signature and Date:
iii) Write down Student ID, Course number and put your signature on top of every
single page of the answer script.
iv) Write down page number at the bottom of every page of the answer script.
v) Upload the scan copy of your answer script in PDF format through provided
google form at the respective course site (i.e., google classroom) using
institutional email within the allocated time. Uploading clear and readable scan
copy (uncorrupted) is your responsibility and must cover the full page of your
answer script. However, for clear and readable scan copy of the answer script
student should use only one side of a page for answering the questions.
vi) You must avoid plagiarism, maintain academic integrity, and ethics. You are
not allowed to take any help from another individual and if taken so can result
in stern disciplinary actions from the university authority.
vii) Marks allotted are indicated in the right margin.
viii) Necessary charts/tables are attached at the end of the question paper. You may
use graph papers where necessary.
ix) Assume any reasonable data if needed.
x) Symbols and characters have their usual meaning.
xi) Before uploading rename the PDF file as CourseNo_StudentID.pdf
e.g., ARC3157_180203001.pdf

The answer script (one single pdf file) must be uploaded at designated location in the provided google
form link available in the google classroom.

There are 6 (Six) Questions. Answer any 4 (Four)

Question 1. [Marks: 12.5]

a) Suppose, while conducting a chain survey, you come across a building while chaining a [4]
line. Describe any one method with sketches how you would overcome this obstacle.

b) A steel tape was exactly 30 m long at 20°C when supported throughout its length under a [8.5]
pull of 10 kg. A line was measured with this tape under a pull of 15 kg and at temperature
of 32°C and found to be (780 + ID) m long. The cross-sectional area of the tape = 0.03
cm2, and its total weight = 0.693 kg. Coefficient of thermal expansion of steel = 11×10-6
per °C and Modulus of Elasticity of steel = 2.1×106 kg/cm2. Compute the true length of the
tape.
Here, ID = Last three (03) digits of Student ID (Example: For 180201025, ID=025)

Question 2. [Marks: 12.5]

a) Define Pilot Survey. Why pilot survey is necessary for conducting research? [2.5]
b) The following are the observed bearings of the lines of a traverse ABCDEA in an area [10]
where local attraction is suspected. Draw the diagram and find the correct bearings of the
lines.
Here, ID = Last three (03) digits of Student ID (Example: For 180201025, ID=025)

AB (78 + 0.1 × ID)015′ (258 + 0.1 × ID)015′

BC (156 + 0.1 × ID)045′ (335 + 0.1 × ID)015′

CD (220 + 0.1 × ID)030′ (42 + 0.1 × ID)000′

DE (236 + 0.1 × ID)015′ (57 + 0.1 × ID)015′

EA (340 + 0.1 × ID)045′ (160 + 0.1 × ID)045′

Question 3. [Marks: 12.5]

a) Briefly explain the contents of research plan with necessary examples. [5]

b) A line was measured by a 20 m chain which was accurate before starting the day′s work. [7.5]
After chaining (900 + ID) m, the chain was found to be 6 cm too long. After chaining a
total distance of (1575 + ID) m, the chain was found to be 14 cm too long. Find the true
distance of the line.
Here, ID = Last three (03) digits of Student ID (Example: For 180201025, ID=025)

Question 4. [Marks: 12.5]
a) Draw and compare the typical contour map of pond and hill. [4]
b) The following staff readings were successively taken using a dumpy level, [8.5]
0.355 m; 0.485 m; 0.625 m; 1.755 m; 1.895 m; 2.350 m; 1.780 m; 0.345 m; 0.685 m; 1.230
m and 2.150 m.

The instrument was shifted after the third, sixth and eighth readings. Prepare a level book
and calculate the RLs of all points by line of collimation method. Apply necessary check.
The RL of the first point is (255 + ID) m.
Here, ID = Last three (03) digits of Student ID (Example: For 180201025, ID=025)

Question 5. [Marks: 12.5]

a) Briefly describe the intersection method of plane tabling with figure. [5]
b) The bearings of the sides of a closed traverse ABCDA are as follows. Draw the diagram [7.5]
and calculate the interior angles of the closed traverse. Apply necessary check.

Line Fore Bearing

AB 60°00′

BC 149°52′
CD 269°30′

DA 20°10′

Question 6. [Marks: 12.5]

a) What are the steps involved in designing a Questionnaire? [3.5]

b) Define Reconnaissance Survey? How it could be conducted? [3.5]
c) An observer standing on the deck of a ship just sees the top of a lighthouse. The top of the [5.5]
light house is (40 + 0.1× ID) m above the sea level and the height of the observer′s eye is 7
m above the sea level. Find the distance of the observer from the lighthouse.
Here, ID = Last three (03) digits of Student ID (Example: For 180201025, ID=025)
