Techniques
Designers are a visual breed.
!
!
Portfolios are their pride and
joy. An array of their finished
work will provide a clear idea
of a designer’s talents, and
allow recruiters to get a great
feel for whether the designer
is the type of person they’d
want to pursue.
!
!
While it’s important to make
sure they have knowledge of
the relevant skills, looking at
their resumes and LinkedIn
profiles isn’t enough.

Enter Dribbble!

Dribbble is one of the most popular places

on the web for designers to showcase their
work. Despite the exclusive nature of their
invite-only signup process, the design board
has swelled to over 460,000 users.
!
These users are posting screenshots of their
process and finished work, as well as
commenting on the work of their designer
compatriots.
!
While you must be invited by a user to post
work, it is free to register in order to follow
users and like their contributions.

Hire Me!
Dribbble is unique from other
professional niche sites in that
users will designate themselves
as open to new opportunities,
whether in a freelance or full time
capacity.
!
Sifting through profile tabs can
give you a great sense of the
designer’s work, interests, and
other members similar to them.
Not all designers will add shots
to Dribbble; however, you can
still get a good understanding of
their design sense through the
shots they like and any buckets
they’ve put together. This manual
curation of designs can be very
helpful in determining if that
particular designer fits with your
needs.

Assessing Users
Following!
If you find a user you really like, checking
out who they follow is a great way to
discover other talented designers. This
also may give some sense into the type of
work they’re interested in.

Followers
Generally speaking, users with more
followers are more respected within the
community. Consider this a positive filter; if
someone has a lot of followers, they’re
truly talented, but don’t hold it against a
candidate if they don’t have a huge
following.

Listed!
Read through the lists a candidate is a
part of and you’ll find similar
candidates. You’ll also get a better
sense of what others think of that
particular designer (i.e. They’ve been
added to the Logo Designers list)

Finding Designers
Click the ‘Designers’ Tab in the top
navigation, and you’ll be taken to a
page with robust profiles and a
powerful search tool. It’s going to
cost you to utilize the full search
functionality, but if you’re trying to
build a team, it’s worth the price.

X-Ray Search
If you want to post a job, there’s no way around paying.
But if it’s just some quality sourcing you’re after, we have
ways of finding you candidates.
!
X-Ray searching allows you to browse every page
Google has indexed based on parameters you define.
You can do this for any site you might want to source,
but for each one, the search string will need to be built a
bit differently. All you have to to is construct a search
string based on the details of your ideal candidate, and
enter the string into Google.
!
On the next page, we’ll unpack an example search
string and give you some terms to fill it with to test out
on your own.
