I. Summary
Breastfeeding helps child development and is shown to have an impact on
the relationship between mother and child. It was introduced and
emphasized to the pregnant women long before they deliver their child to
know how important it was to the child development, protection from
infectious disease, and to their health. The breast milk also contains colostrum
which is rich in micronutrients, vitamins, and IgA, which can help the immune
system of the child to fight possible harmful agents. However, even though
the mothers were practice in the hospitals and provided information about
the importance of exclusive breastfeeding their child for 6 months by the
efforts of health care workers only a few of them successfully exclusively
breastfeed their child in 6 months. They have many reasons why they stop,
such as insufficient breast milk, difficulty, and pain during breastfeeding,
voluntary termination because it was stressful. The study also shows that most
of the mothers who have high educational attainment have a higher chance
of hearing exclusive breastfeeding which needs the attention of
policymakers and health workers to increase their effort to emphasize the
importance of exclusive breastfeeding in society.

II. Nursing Implication

A. To Nursing Practice
This article is essential since as nurses we will be promoting and emphasizing
breastfeeding to our pregnant women in the hospitals. As the article was
shown to us that even though the majority of them know that exclusive
breastfeeding, they didn’t continue it for 6 months which can be impacted
the growth and development of the child. Breastfeeding is important and
essential to all of the mothers and we can use and teach it because most of
them are capable of doing it without paying a cent’s and the only thing they
need to do is put in an effort and learn how to do it. We should improve our
health by teaching our mothers about exclusive breastfeeding since the
result of the study is unexpectedly low which means we need an
improvement as a health care worker.

B. To Nursing Education
As a student nurse, the article provides us with the necessary information in
improving our health by teaching the mother about exclusive breastfeeding.
The breast milk contains colostrum which had been teaching us many times
how important it was to a child since it has complete nutrition to provide a
strong immune system for a child. The study also showed that they are only
33.3% able to finish the exclusive breastfeeding which is unexpected since we
always emphasize it to the mothers whenever we are in the OB ward. As a
student nurse, we need to further improvement and reading to acquire the
knowledge and skill to improve our nursing care to our mother and child
health
C. To Nursing Research
I recommend the article to my fellow student since it has a lot of information
about breastfeeding that they can use in both hospital and community duty.
However, they need further research since they use a cross-sectional study
which unable to determine the relationship between the outcome of interest
of the study, they should also do it in a 3 rd world country to compare if there
was a significant difference in the implementation and adaptation of
exclusive breastfeeding to advance civilization to developing counties.

III. Personal Insight

I agree that policymakers and health care providers need to improve and
emphasize breastfeeding to mothers. Breastfeeding is important for both the
baby and child while preventing the risk for breast and ovarian cancer to the
mother it also provides nutrition to the baby which both of them wins without
paying. Even rich countries like Italy can’t implement it will how much more to
the countries like the Philippines who have a limited capability in reaching all
of the population to provide any information to the mothers. I didn’t see any
valid reason for the mothers if you are capable to do exclusive breastfeeding
for 6 months why not just put an extra effort and practice and it’s a lifelong
immunity for your baby. But of course, the research is implemented in a rich
country where people can have alternative milk for their babies. The WHO
recommends 6-month exclusive breastfeeding and by the joint effort of
health care workers hopefully, we can improve the result of future studies
about exclusive breastfeeding.
