The contractions ‘al’ and ‘del’ in KEY POINTS:
Spanish.

Spanish contraction ‘al’ Before masculine singular nouns

This comes from combining ‘a’ (the
English preposition ‘to’ or ‘at’) with ‘el’
→ use el.

(the masculine singular definite article Before feminine singular nouns

‘the’). → use la.
a + el = al (translates as ‘to the’ or ‘at Before feminine singular nouns
the’) starting with stressed a or ha
→ use el.
Incorrect example
Before masculine plural nouns
--> Vamos a el bar. (We go to the bar.)
Correct example
→ use los.
--> Vamos al bar. (We go to the bar.) Before feminine plural nouns
→ use las.
Spanish contraction ‘del’ a + el → al
de + el → del
This comes from combining ‘de’ (the
English preposition ‘of’ or ‘from’) with ‘el’
(the masculine singular definite article
‘the’).
de + el = del (translates as ‘of the’ or
‘from the’)

Incorrect example
--> ¿La tarea es de el maestro? (Is the
homework from the teacher?)
Correct example
--> ¿La tarea es del maestro? (Is the
homework from the teacher?)
