THEORETICAL FOUNDATION IN NURSING

1. Define the following terms:


A. Nursing The actions taken by the nurses on behalf of or in conjunction with human beings,
and the goals or outcomes of nursing actions.
B. Concept- The label may be a word or phrase that summarize ideas, observations, and
experiences so as to provide a mental image for the purpose of facilitating communication
and understanding about the phenomena.
C. Concept Framework- is specifically defined as a set of concepts and statements that
integrate the concepts into a meaningful configuration. It is also composed of abstract and
general concepts and propositions that provide a frame of reference for members of the
discipline.
D. Theory- Is an organized, coherent and systematic articulation of a set of statement related
to significant questions in a discipline that are communicated in a meaningful whole.
Discovered or invented for describing, predicting, or prescribing events, situations,
conditions, or relationships.
E. Nursing Theory- Is defined by meleis as a conceptualization of scene aspect of reality that
pertains to nursing. The conceptualization is articulated for the purpose of describing,
explaining, predicting, or prescribing nursing care.
F. Principle- Nurses and nursing staff treat everyone under their care and respect and
humanity. They are aware of each Persons unique requirements, compassionate, sensitive
and they treat everyone equally.

4. Discuss the types of theories.

A. Ideas that are based on other theories are known as meta theories. These are hypotheses
concerning hypotheses.

B. Grand theories are complex and have a large reach; as a result, they must first be further
defined through research before being completely tested. Its purpose is to provide broad,
abstract notions about nursing a structural framework.

C. Middle-range theories: they are more focused, less abstract, address particular phenomena
or ideas, and take practice into account (administration, clinical or teaching).

D. Descriptive Theories- Its the first level of theory development. They describe phenomena, speculate
on why phenomena occur, ad describe the consequences of phenomena. They have the ability to
explain, relate, and in some situations predict nursing phenomena . Example: Theories of Growth and
Development.

E. Prescriptive Theories-   It Address nursing interventions and predict the consequence of specific
nursing intervention. Thus Prescriptive theories are action oriented, which test the validity and
predictability of a nursing intervention.

5. Enumerate the importance of nursing theories.

• To define, anticipate, and clarify the phenomenon of nursing.

• Lay the groundwork for nursing practice, contribute to the creation of new knowledge, and suggest
the path future advancements in nursing should take.

•Help differentiate what ought to serve as the cornerstone of practice by specifically describing nursing.

nursing collaboration, as well as advice on research and teaching.

•Caring, the primary aspect of nursing, cannot be quantified. The theory is essential for analyzing and
explaining what nurses perform.
