Essential Oil Remedies for

Easing That Bad Cold
The following home remedies all use essential oils to help with cold & flu
issues. These are all very simple remedies that can be done quickly. They
only require essential oils that are common and easy to find.

I like to buy my essential oils from these companies:

Rocky Mountain Oils, Starwest Botanicals, and Plant Therapy. **Plant

Therapy and Rocky Mountain Oils both have kid-safe information too! In
the spirit of full disclosure, these are affiliate links, and I do purchase my
own essential oils from them all.

This guide is laid out by symptoms of cold and flu. The different sections
include essential oil remedies for congestion, aches & fever, boosting the
immune system, moving lymph, and getting rest.

You may notice that rubbing essential oils on the soles of your feet is not
mentioned. You can find out more about this practice in this article. Many
people have good results by rubbing essential oils on the bottoms of
their feet. If you’d like to do this, just be sure to dilute the essential oils
well. Some essential oils are “hot” and can actually burn your skin.

I hope you enjoy these ideas! That cold won’t stand a chance against
natural remedies, especially if you catch it early!

And a quick note about diffusers: The quality of the diffuser you use
makes a difference. There are several kinds, and you can learn more
about them here: How to Choose a Diffuser for Your Home (And All the
Types).

For Congestion:

Diffusing Essential Oils

Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways to help relieve congestion
from stuffy nose, runny nose, and pressure in the sinus area. Here is my
favorite blend:

3 drops Peppermint essential oil

3 drops Eucalyptus essential oil

1 drop Tea Tree or Lemon essential oil

Diffuse for 30 minutes to an hour.

Vapor Rub Oil

To make a great oil to rub on your chest to help with congestion, you can
use 10 drops of peppermint essential oil, 10 drops of eucalyptus
essential oil, and about 4-5 drops of tea tree or rosemary essential oil in a
one ounce amount of carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or
almond oil.

Rub this on your chest and neck to help with congestion. (This is a very
conservative amount of essential oil to use. You could actually double this
amount for an ounce of carrier oil and still be ok.)

To Make a Vapor Rub Salve

1) Use 1/2 cup of almond oil and 1/8 cup of beeswax. Melt together over
very low heat.

2) Once melted, remove from heat and add the essential oils:

30 drops Peppermint

30 drops Eucalyptus

10 drops Rosemary

10 drops Lavender

5 drops Ginger

**These dilutions are on the very conservative side. I like my vapor rub to
be much stronger, and I’ve never had a problem. It’s better to start with a
lower amount of essential oil to carrier, though, and see how you like it.

3) Pour the liquid into a four ounce jar and allow to cool completely.

Shower Steam

This is one of the easiest things you can do! Just drop 4-5 drops of
eucalyptus and/or peppermint onto the floor of your shower, right
outside the stream of water. You’ll have a lovely stead to help you breathe
again!

Make a Roller Bottle for Congestion

Just get a 10 mL roller bottle (you can get these on Amazon)

Use 10 drops of Peppermint and 5 drops of Eucalyptus, and drop these

into the bottle.

Add your carrier oil (almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, or even olive
oil) to the top.

Shake gently to combine the essential oils with the carrier oil.

Rub onto your temples, around your ears, and across the top of your
forehead.

For Aches & Fever

**If you have a high fever, please seek medical attention. You can find out
more about fevers in this article: Natural Remedies for Dealing with Cold
& Flu.

Diffusing Essential Oils

Use 4 drops Ginger, 2 drops Black Pepper, and 2 drops Rosemary. Diffuse
for 30 minutes.

Make a Cooling Compress

Use a couple of drops of Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils on a

warm, moist washcloth. Apply to your forehead.

(You can also drop the essential oils into two cups of warm water, then
use this to wet and wring the washcloth.)

Make a Warming Compress

If you have a hot, dry fever, you want to help your body to sweat. So this
kind of compress would be best:

Use a couple drops of Ginger, Black Pepper, and Rosemary essential oils
in two cups of water. Make your compress as above.

Massage Oil for Achy Muscles

30 drops Ginger essential oil

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

10 drops Black Pepper essential oil

Massage into aching areas.

To Boost the Immune System

Diffusing Essential Oils:

Diffuse

4 drops Peppermint essential oil

3 drops Sage, Oregano, or Thyme

1 drops Rosemary

1 drop Clove essential oil

Or this blend:

3 drops Peppermint

2 drops Lemon

1 drop Rosemary

1 drop Clove

1 drop Cinnamon

(This is the classic Four Thieves of the folk legend version.)

To Move Lymph

Moving lymph fluid will help relieve pressure on inflamed lymph nodes.
You know those bumps you get in your throat when you are sick? Well,
they are painful and large when your body is fighting off the germs. You
want to keep it moving to get better faster!

Make a Lymph Moving Roller Bottle:

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

5 drops Ginger essential oil

Add to a 10 mL roller bottle. Then add your carrier oil to the top. Shake
gently. Roll liberally onto the throat area and wherever you have swollen
lymph nodes.

To Rest

Diffusing Essential Oils

Diffuse some lavender and eucalyptus for an hour or so in your room

before bed. This combination will help relax you and help you sleep.

You can also dilute this combination (about 40 drops per ounce of carrier
oil) in some carrier oil and use to rub onto your chest and temples.

**If you are sensitive to lavender, try marjoram essential oil. It is wonderful
for relaxing!
