INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Letters are a means of communication to give information in written form on paper by

one party to another, both individuals and organizations. Letters are a form of written
communication in which there are several elements, including:
1. The sender of the letter, which is the party who conveys the message
2. Letter messages, which are the contents of the letter submitted in the form of
Notifications, Requests/requests, Statements, Orders, Reports, and so on.
3. The recipient of the letter is the party who receives the message

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1 DEFINITION OF INFORMAL LETTER

An informal letter is a letter written in a free language (not necessarily official). You
can write it in the language you want, it can be daily English spoken, or the language you
use with the recipient of the letter. You can also convey the message you want to convey
freely.

Informal letter is a letter that is used in informal situations. An informal letter does not
have to be written in a standard language and structure.

The most important thing in an informal letter is that the content or intent of the letter
is clearly stated. Although in an informal letter the use of language does not have to be
standard, but it must still be communicative and in polite language. Unofficial letters are
usually in the form of an introduction letter to someone, a letter to a friend about some
news, or a letter to a relative.

2.2 STRUCTURE OF INFORMAL LETTER

The following is an explanation of the structure of an informal letter:

1. Opening
The first step is addressing your reader. This is fairly straightforward and is
usually not as important as it would be with a business or formal letter. There are still
a few things that you should know in terms of addressing someone properly in an
informal letter.
a. British English does not employ the use of a period after abbreviated titles, but
American English does.
b. Secondly, if you are sending a letter to a married woman, the correct abbreviation
is "Mrs." and if you are sending an letter to a non-married woman, the correct
abbreviation is "Ms."
c. Choosing whether or not to use a title depends on how well you know the person
to which the letter is addressed. If you are on very friendly terms, simply use their
first name. The way in which you greet your reader is up to you. Be sure to never
forget the comma after the name.
d. State your of opening sentences by asking about the addresse's condition.
2
2. Body
The contents of your letter should be written in a personal and friendly tone.
However, it's important to adjust your use of language to the person you are writing
to. A good way of assessing how you should write is to think about how you would
interact with the person you are writing to in real life. Here are some matters that
commonly talked/written on the body of informed letter.
a. Subjects to include in the body.
b. State your reason for writing.
c. Expand on what you mentioned in the first paragraph.
d. Ask about the person you are writing to.
e. Make some concluding remarks.
f. Invite the person to write back.
3. Closing
The closing is where you summarize your letter and say goodbye to the reader.
The examples below offer some ideas of what to write in the closing section of your
informal letter.
4. Signature
In terms of signing off, the choice is yours and you have a lot of freedom here.
After you've chosen one that fits the overall tone of your letter, simply sign your
name.

2.3 CHARACTERISTICS OF INFORMAL LETTER

The characteristics of informal letters are very different from the official letters that
we often see or receive from offices, governments and official organizations. There are
significant differences between official and unofficial letters, it should be noted.
The following are the characteristics of an informal letter:
a. Not equipped with letterhead (letterhead)
b. Language does not have to be standard
c. There is no letter number
d. The opening and closing greetings are informal
e. The use of language, adapted to the tastes of the author
f. Free format

2.4 SAMPLE OF INFORMAL LETTER

3.2 SUGGESTION
Unofficial letters are made for those of us who want to give letters to our
closest colleagues, such as relatives, friends and others, we can write informal letters
to those closest to us because we don't use language that seems formal and relaxed to
write or read.
When writing an informal letter, make sure to use polite language and not
criticize any institution, never use an informal letter for something formal such as a
school letter, marriage letter, job letter, organization letter etc.
