GAMES MODEL LEARNING TO IMPROVE ABILITY

STUDENT ENGLISH VOCABULARY

A. INTRODUCTION

Today's English has entered the era of globalization so that learning English is an
obligation that inevitably must be understood and mastered. In Indonesia, English is a foreign
language that is taught in schools or madrasah ranging from elementary, ibtidaiyah to Islamic
college level. The need for this English language competence increasingly high considering the
development and globalization of the world today. Curriculum used today is competency-
oriented, meaning that students are required to to have certain competencies or skills as a result
of the process learning at school. Competency-based education emphasizes on abilities that must
be possessed by graduates of a level of education. Competence what is often referred to as a
competency standard is an ability that graduates must master. There are four competencies that a
person must have: English learners namely; Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
Competence according to Hall and Jones (1976: 29) is a "statement that" describe the appearance
of a certain ability in a round manner that is a combination of knowledge and abilities that can be
observed and be measured". Competence (ability) of graduates is the main capital to compete at
the global level, because the competition that occurs is on the ability of human power. Therefore.
That is, the application of competency-based education is expected to produce graduates who are
able to compete at the global level. The old paradigm of learning English, students always have a
language view English is 'a ghost, difficult to learn and boring' we have often heard . here
demanded innovation and creativity in teaching teachers, so that students will be more active and
active in learning English and will make it as one of the subjects favorite subject. The problem in
language acquisition is how (Sugeng Wahyudi, 2006:5). The right way will be biased in the
psychological atmosphere of "nice or not" pleasant". Sunatullah, humans tend to avoid the
"unpleasant" and choose the "fun". The more fun, the more emotional there is more attention,
there is more motivation, easier to express, not shy and others. When learning English is
conditioned with a pleasant psychological atmosphere, it is expected that students, especially
young learners, are able to learn the language well and fast, in this context is learning English.

1. GAMES
Game is one form of social activity that is very dominant in the early days of children. Therefore,
children spend more time outside the house to play with his friends than be involved with other
activities. Therefore, games for children is a form of fun activity undertaken solely for the activity itself,
not because they want to get a result from such activities. This is due to children that the process of
doing something is more interesting than the results that will be received. For every child, especially
young children, playing means learning. Indeed the world of children is playing, since by playing,
children will learn many things about everyday life. With games, we as parents can incorporate
elements of education therein.
