BACKGROUND

In 1964, the first JT8D aircraft engine FIRST POWER PT.C. INST=ED, i'pa:L 1963
entered commercial service. This engine is
used on the Boeing 727 and 737, the McDonnell
Douglas DC9 series and MD-80 series, and the
Aeropatiale Caravelle aircraft. The short to
medium range service of these aircraft result
in takeoffs and landings as often as hourly,
which required a rugged design capable of
cyclic duty. Continued upratings over the
years, have retained the durable design while
improving performance considerably.

The JT8D is now the most widely used jet

engine in commercial aviation history, with
more than 13,000 engines delivered to
airlines and more than 285 million hours
flown.
