| - a Bs 4449 1978 British Standard Specification for Hot rolled steel bars for the reinforcement of concrete This British Standard specifies requirements for hot rolled steel bars forthe reinforcement of concrete. It covers plain ‘ound steel bars in grade 250 only and deformed high yield steel bar in grade 460/425 only. Stora oe rule, hee may be agreed betes he ‘manufacturer and the purcarer atthe ime of nui and ods This standard also specifies weldabilty requirements for ‘both grades of ste! in terms of the carbon equivalent value Steel bats for use as lifting hooks for reinforeed concrete ‘mombers are not included in thie standord, Steol bars produced by re-allng finished products or by ‘olling material whose metallurgical history is not known “an fully documented are excluded trom this standard 2. References The titles of standards publications referred to in this. standard are listed on the inside back cover, 3. Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply 2.1 bar. A steel product of plain round or deformed cross section, a5olled, including a rod of steel 2.2 hot rolled deformed bar. A bar which hat beon £0 shaped during hot rolling that it conforms to either the ‘geometrical or performance test classification given in clause 14 3.3 nominal size. The diameter ofa circle with an area equal to the effective cross-sectional area of the bar, in 3.4 nominal density. The value of 0.007 85 kg/mm? par ‘metre run, taken for the purpose of converting a length and crosssectional area ofa bar to Its mass, a described in clauses 12 and 13. 3.5 yield stress. The stress measured during the tensile test ‘when the total extension of the gauge length is 0.5 %. 3.6 coil. One continuous aso bar in the form of a col 27 length. & pioce of nominally straight bar eut to a specified length, 3.8 bundle. Two oF more coils or a number of lengths properly bound together, 3.9 batch. Any quantity of bars of one size and grade ‘whether in coil or bundles presented for examination and test at any one time, 3.30 tongttudinel A vovtorm contiqueue rp nari! 10 the axis ofthe bar 3.11 transverse rib. Any rib on the surface of the bar other than a longitudinal rib, 3.12 flash wold. Resistance butt weld in which the while the current, confined to localized points of contact, causes expulsion of molten metal. When welding tempecatua i reached, ust force is applied. 4, Information to be supplied by the purchaser “The purchaser shall give the following b fon the order (a) the numberof this British Standard, {b) the nominal size ofthe bar (c) the ste ora (d} bond elattifiations; (e) any adltional requirements (see 10.2 and clauses 1,11, 16) 5. Nominal size In checking the nominal sizeof a bar in accordance with Clause 13 shall be taken into account. 6. Preferred sizes 6.1. The nominal sizes of bars given in table 1 are the prefered sizes. Nominal cross-sectional area and mass 7.1 The exact values for the nominal cross sectional area and mass of individual bars shall be as given in table 2. 7.2 The total cross-sectional area and total mass of two oF ‘mote bars shall be calculated pro-ata on the basis of the values for an individual bar. All erss-sectional areas derived from the values in table 2 shall be exprested to three significant figures
