Wash Your Hands to Protect Yourself from the Coronavirus

Let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time, there were these children that called themselves “Dirty
Hands.” They hated to take showers and their hands were always dirty. When they
were asked to wash their hands before eating, instead of washing their hands they
would play with the water. They were also known to waste water which is a precious
natural resource that should not be wasted.
They would eat with their dirty hands so they also ate all kinds of ugly bacteria
and other gross germs. When they would go the restaurant, they would leave papers
everywhere- dirty toilets and they would never wash their hands.
“Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Wait a minute! What is happening here? I’m
not liking this. What do you think about this? Is something a little bit wrong here?
Before you tell me what you think about this situation, let me tell you something. I
think that they are not behaving very well. I do wash my hands and I don’t leave a
messy restroom. How about you? This kid can get sick because they do not wash
their hands. They can also spread diseases to other children that do wash their
hands and are clean.
Let me show you.
Germs, viruses and bacteria from the hands of these children will be left
everywhere and the other kids will get them on their hands. When they touch their
face, they will introduce the germs into their body. There is a possibility for illness

10
right there. These kids should wash their hands and think about how it is not nice
to leave the bathroom dirty or to waste water. They can get sick and get others sick.
If you wash your hands every time after you go to the restroom, before you eat, and
after you play you will get rid of the germs, bacteria and viruses that these kids leave
everywhere.
Let me call my friend, Peping.
Together, we will show you how to wash your hands.
1. Get a paper towel and put it aside before you turn on the water.
2. Turn the water on and wet your hands.
3. Turn off the water while you scrub your hands and rub your hands
together for at least 20 seconds making sure that you cover all the parts of
your hand. Scrub under your nails, rinse the soap off of your hands then
use the paper towel that you’ve put aside to turn off the water. Dry your
hands and then use the paper towel to open the door of the bathroom.
4. Throw the paper towel in the trash can.
If you wash your hands often especially before you eat, after you go to the
restroom, and while you are in school, you will protect yourself from getting sick.
Remember, these children Dirty Hands should change their nickname to Clean
Hands. If they do, they will be healthy and will feel good about themselves.
Questions:
1. What is the story all about?
_______________________________________________________________
2. Who called themselves dirty hands?
_______________________________________________________________
3. Why are they called dirty hands?
_______________________________________________________________
4. Based on the story, what can possibly happen if you will not wash your hands?
_______________________________________________________________
5. How do the children acquire germs or bacteria?
_______________________________________________________________
6. What should the children do to get rid of bacteria and viruses scattered
everywhere?
_______________________________________________________________
7. According to the story, how should you wash your hands?
_______________________________________________________________
8. How will you protect yourselves from getting sick?
_______________________________________________________________
9. Do you also wash your hands? How often? How do you wash your hands?
_______________________________________________________________
10.What is the significance of the story to the COVID-19 Pandemic?

What Is It

Noting details is a reading comprehension skill

that involves picking out from a piece of text the particular
pieces/pieces of information to a given purpose. This skill
enables the reader to fully understand a certain text and
helps to unlock the questions he/she has before, during,
and after reading.
In order to note details always read the story with
full understanding and internalize the lines printed. You
may also jot down notes or highlight text. You will know
that you are doing the right thing when the things you
have taken down describes the main idea and the
supporting ideas or answers the questions who, what,
where, when, and how.
