Social Justice and Activism Reflection

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) decided to open a COVID-19 vaccine

superstation. With a target of vaccinating 5000 health care workers daily, On January 11,2021,

they opened the first large-scale vaccination site in California. Two weeks later, more than

58,000 community members have been vaccinated, which is excellent work from them. This

work required more than 300 personnel daily, approximately 120 in clinical and 180 in

administrative roles. In addition, they developed a web page to involve community members

who wanted to volunteer (Longhurst et al., 2021).

However, during my master's degree journey in San Diego, I had the opportunity to help the

community by applying to volunteer at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) to help

them in the vaccination sites. This opportunity helped me to figure out how to help people in the

community. There were many positions, but I am not a licensed pharmacist in California. I

couldn't work as a healthcare provider; I worked as an observer, providing oversight to the

patients after receiving the vaccine and escalating any adverse reactions to the appropriate

medical staff.

Additionally, the observer's work is to help patients to sign up for the V-Safe app, ensuring

patients stay for 15/30 minutes of observation time and reiterate any applicable education. I

volunteered there for several days finishing with them for around 30 hours.
