Commentary on the Essay Philosophy of Education in Today’s

World and Tomorrow’s: A view from ‘Down Under’

This paper contains my commentary on some issues the author examined

in his essay Philosophy of Education in Today's World and Tomorrow's: A View

from 'Down Under. The historical background of the philosophy of education of

Australia and New Zealand has a rich background. It underwent transitions from

the 'isms' approach to the emergence of the analytical philosophy of education.

The focus was shifted and reduced to analyzing the meanings of concepts

instead of focusing on the lives of teachers and students. There then arise

questions on whether this discipline serves its purpose, and some argue about its

inappropriateness and whether it gives answers about the world.

I think the philosophy of education should be utilized to educate people on

moral principles. I supported the authors' speculation about how education was

looked upon as more a luxury than a necessity, and teachers focus on enhancing

their employment rather than pursuing something that impacts the educational

system. Nowadays, it is sad to think that pursuing higher education for career

promotion is the main goal as to why teachers enhance themselves. It is also

why there is a need for a philosophy of education to fit in the world. We need an

education that would teach students how to be functioning individuals in society,

inculcate moral goodness and values, and prepare students for their future and

what awaits them.

Another speculation he discussed were the three central foci: the

community of philosophers of education, the academy and practitioners,

implicates the philosophy of education in today's world change Tomorrow's

world. How does Philosophy of education 'fit" in the world? In an academic

community of philosophers of education, there is a diversity that they need to

address and is already influenced by feminism. There is beauty to this influence,

even I am not a feminist, but it is one step closer to making themselves heard

and understood. It is also good that cultural groups are represented in national

and international communities, making the philosophy of education global. The

contribution of the academe such as research, teaching, and administration had

also improved, and I can say that it had helped their country's educational

system. That's one of the reasons why Australia is one of the most developed

countries when it comes to their educational system is their innovations and

contributions to academic research. And when it comes to the involvement of

their practitioners such as their teachers, administrators, policy-makers,

researchers and parents: I can say that they have positive involvement and give

full support, especially when attending to the educational welfare of the children.
