I. Title: Technical and Operational Definitions

II. Learning Competency:

The most essential learning competency in this learning activity sheet is to

give a technical and operational definition of terms. (EN10V-III-13.9)

III. General Instructions: Welcome to English 10, Quarter 4-Week 2 on Technical

and Operational Definitions!
This activity sheet intends to develop your skills in writing while exposing
you with contents that align with research. The activities designed for you allow
you to think freely, explore ideas actively, and read other learning resources
independently to advance your skills in academic writing.
The lesson in this activity sheet enables you to give a technical and
operational definition of terms.

IV. Activities

A. IS IT TECHNICAL OR OPERATIONAL?

Definition of words may come in varied types and kinds. Before a concept
can be measured, it must be defined. With this premise, researchers develop two
kinds of definition: technical definition and operational definition.

Read the following sentences and observe how the italicized words are
defined. Then reflect on the questions that follow.

1. Automobile
A. The automobile is a road vehicle, typically with four wheels, powered by
an internal combustion engine or electric motor.
B. The automobile is a car or truck that gets you around from place to
place, carries cargo or passengers, and makes it easier to live in the city
or countryside.

2. Compass
A. A compass is an instrument containing a magnetized pointer which
shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it.
B. A compass guides the hikers by detecting the Earth’s natural magnetic
fields or by determining the direction of the Sun or a star.

3. Cathedral
A. The principal church of a diocese that contains the cathedra or seat of a
bishop is called a cathedral.
B. The cathedral mainly serves God in the community by being a place of
Christian worship, through its hierarchical and organizational position in
the church structure.

What did you notice in the way the words “automobile, compass, and
cathedral” are defined? How do you differentiate definitions A from B? Which is a
better way to define a word?

B. POINTS TO PONDER!

You might notice that the first definitions of “automobile, compass, and
cathedral” speak of how they are designed to work by its inventor, its engineers or
its programmers. On one hand, the second definitions are descriptions of how the
“automobile, compass, and cathedral” actually work in the real world and by real
users.
The first examples of definitions giving more accurate descriptions of things
and ideas, but not necessarily its use to users, are what we call technical
definitions. On the contrary, the second examples of definitions showing
descriptions of how the words are used and applied based on contexts and the real
world, are what we call operational definitions.
Technical definition mostly refers to the aspect of explaining or describing
any technical terms or terminology. Technical definitions could be used in
expanding the vocabulary since most of these terms are explained in the exact
manner. Examples include the terms and definitions of the words found in the
dictionary.
Operational definition, on the other hand, is more on the application of the
word. For example, these may include the various attempts to define or explain a
certain process and its properties including but not limited to the characteristics of
the event itself. It is the specific meaning of a word or phrase given to it by the
group of people who use the word in their specific context.

Directions: For each of the following statements, please provide an operational
definition and technical definition for the underlined words. Keep in mind that an
operational definition is one that makes it clear how the researcher should go
about measuring the process, activity, or thing. Whereas, a technical definition
could be a denotative meaning of the words found in the dictionary.
