LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO ICT


Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Improve their knowledge on how ICT affects their


everyday lives and the state of our nation;
2. Compare and contrast the differences between online
platforms, sites, and content;
3. Learn the different trends in ICT and appreciate them.
Definition of Terms
• ICT – Information and Communications Technology
• It refers to the technologies, both hardware and
software, that enable humans to communicate with
one another. It is common misconception that ICT is
Internet and computer alone. Basically, it is any form
of technology that enable you to communicate.
• It deals with the use of different communication
technologies such as mobile phones, telephone,
Internet to locate, save, send and edit information
ICT in the Philippines
• Philippines is dub as the ‘’ICT Hub of Asia” because
of huge growth of ICT-related jobs, one of which is
BPO, Business Process Outsourcing, or call centers.
• ICT Department in the Philippines is responsible for
the planning, development and promotion of the
country’s information and communications
technology (ICT) agenda in support of national
development.
Trends in ICT
1. Convergence
It is the synergy of technological advancements to
work on a similar goal or task. For example, besides
using your personal computer to create word
documents, you can now use your smartphone.

2. Social Media
It is a website, application, or online channels that
enable web users to create, co-create, discuss,
modify, and exchange user-generated content.
a. Social Networks. These are sites that allow you to connect with other
people with the same interests or background.

b. Bookmarking Sites. These are sites that allow you to store and manage
links to various websites and resources.

c. Social News. These are sites that allow users to post their own news
items or links to other news sources.

d. Media Sharing. These are sites that allow you to upload and share media
content like images, music, and video.

a. Microblogging. These are sites that focus on short updates from the user.

b. Blogs and Forums. These websites allow users to post their content.

3. Mobile Technologies
The popularity of smartphones and
tablets has taken a major rise over the
years. This is largely because of the
devices’ capability to do tasks that were
originally found in personal computers.
a. iOS
b. Android
c. Blackberry OS
d. Windows Phone OS
e. Symbian
f. WebOS
g. Windows Mobile
iOS – use in apple devices such as iPhone and iPad
Android – an open source OS developed by Google. Being
open source means mobile phone companies use this OS for
free.
Blackberry OS – use in blackberry devices
Windows phone OS – A closed source and proprietary
operating system developed by Microsoft.
Symbian – the original smartphone OS. Used by Nokia
devices
WebOS- originally used in smartphone; now in smart TVs.
Windows Mobile – developed by Microsoft for
smartphones and pocket PCs

4. Assistive Technology (AT)

It is any device, software or equipment


that helps people with disabilities work
around challenges so they can learn,
communicate and simply function better.
For instance, software that reads aloud
text from a computer is AT.
Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him],
giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:17)
