標題 Report on the power outage in Wan Chai

段落 1 (起) Introduction

簡單介紹主角、發生了甚 On 9th September, 2008 at 11:03 a.m., there was a power outage in the Western

麼事、事件地點、何時發 Wan Chai Commercial Centre inside which six people were trapped owing to a

生 locked fire exit. Written by one of the six victims Pat Chan, the following report

details what was like to be caught up in this incident.

段落 2 (承) Before the outage

進一步描述事件,描述感 As scheduled, two other candidates and I arrived at ABC Musical Company’s office

受 on the fifth floor at around 10:45 a.m. to attend an audition for a part-time job in

a musical drama. We were instructed to wait in the office while the two directors

were preparing for the interview.

casement, we were cloaked in complete darkness. The directors, candidates and I

immediately rushed to the front room to attempt to escape. Yet, as the entrance

was sealed by an automatic door with an encrypted password, without electricity

it malfunctioned. We then immediately took a detour to the emergency fire exit

on the other side of the office.

Responding to her desperate yelp, we successfully sought a first-aid kit right away

from the pantry just in the vicinity. While the injured was being tended to and

bandaged by two escapees, the rest of us proceeded to look for the exits.

As we arrived at the exit, we fumbled for the handle and pushed the door only to

realize that it was blocked and locked. In a surge of panic, I immediately contacted

the police for an extraction squad. Without any means to escape, we sat and

waited in desperation for an hour before the fire services rescued us from the

building.

For question 1, write about 200 words.
You are the chairperson of the school’s Eco-friendly Club. You just organized the following activity:
Eco-friendly Club
Bottle Collection Day
Date: 21-22 February

Help recycle plastic bottles.

Drop them in the bin at the school gate.
However, the activity did not receive much support from your schoolmates. The club’s teacher adviser
has asked you to write a report about the event, the problems you observed and your suggestions for
improvement.

標題 Report on Bottle Collection Day

段落 1 The event

簡單介紹活動 Last week, Eco-friendly Club had its first attempt at plastic bottle collection. We

asked students to dispose of their bottles in designated bins at various places on

the school campus in order to encourage recycling amongst our peers. We also

asked students to bring in bottles from home.

段落 2 Problems

分析活動出現的問題 The main problem we encountered was the enthusiasm of students. Very few

students brought their bottles to school. This was unfortunate as it meant that we

were not able to recycle as much.

14

段落 3-5 Solutions

提出解決方法 a. Advertise earlier

To ensure that this problem does not happen again, we should take the following

measures. Firstly, it is necessary to advertise earlier. We only gave students one

week’s notice, so perhaps they did not have time to collect bottles. Next time, for

any activity we organize, we will advertise one month in advance and send out

reminders every week.

b. Extend the collection period

Another solution is to extend the collection period. We only allocated two days for

this recycling activity. Obviously, this was not long enough. Next time, when we

hold a collection activity, we will do it for one or two weeks so that students can

bring more collection items back.

c. Increase the amount of collection points

A final point to consider is the amount of collection points in the school. We only

had one for this particular collection. Perhaps in the future, we should consider

having one in each classroom.

段落 6 Conclusion

總結 In conclusion, we have learned many valuable lessons that will guarantee success

in the coming activities. The members of our club are very dedicated and it is

certain that all these recommendations will be implemented in order to ensure a

better outcome next time.

Help to raise money to build schools in China

段落 1 Why take part?

為何 Poverty in rural areas in Mainland China has always been a thorny problem. There is a lack of

參加 education facilities in these regions. Thousands of pitiful children do not have the opportunity to

receive education. The annual walkathon aims to raise funds for Walk to Build to help the needy on

the mainland. The money raised will be spent on constructing schools in China, as well as subsidizing

children’s education expenses. In the walkathon last year, we successfully raised HK$100,000 for the

redevelopment projects in Sichuan and enabled more than one thousand students to go to school.
16

段落 2 The route of the walk

活動 This year, we set the route of the walk on Lion Rock Mountain. It provides a golden opportunity for

詳情 participants to experience the route the children living in hilly areas of China always take to go to

school. The duration of the walk will be approximately two hours. With tracks that are a little

challenging, it will be both exciting and fun for students and their families to join this meaningful

activity. The beautiful scenery of Kowloon is also the highlight of the event.

段落 3 The work of Walk to Build

組織 Founded in 2006, Walk to Build is a local charity aiming at building schools and providing teaching

resources for provinces in China that suffer from poverty. Poverty has rendered children unable to go to
介紹

school since their families can hardly pay for their education expenses. The hilly and tortuous road makes

it even more difficult for children to go to school.

Walk to Build will use the donations to build and repair schools, as well as to provide training for teachers.

Walk to Build has already constructed over ten schools in impoverished provinces in Mainland China.

With better education, people in Mainland China will be capable of escaping from impoverishment. What

are you waiting for? Join the walkathon and help the people in need!

Feature Article (專題文章) -- 範例一

HKDSE English 2012 Q1

You are a famous news reporter for Hong Kong News.

Your old secondary school has asked you to write a feature article about yourself for the next edition of the

school magazine.

Use the following three headings to write the article. Add one heading of your own.

- The best part of my job

- The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my job

- My school days

- Another heading

段落 1 The best part of my job

工作最 Many students might think that the best part of being a reporter is that they can interview public

好之處 figures and celebrities, say Andy Lau, Eason Chan or whoever you like, However, this is not what I

think. In fact, when it comes to the most rewarding part of my job, probably the first springing to my

mind is that I hold the responsibility to reveal the truth to the general public. I report different affairs

happening every day in our society, including political and business news, thus giving a more

comprehensive view of our city to citizens. This sense of accomplishment has driven me to pursue

perfection relentlessly in my reporting career.

20

段落 2 The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my job

工作最 When asked about the biggest challenge ever faced by other reporters, most of them will be

大挑戰 unanimous in their answer – deadlines of articles. While it is beyond doubt that meeting tight

deadlines is indeed the most terrifying task for a reporter, my experience is a little bit different. The

biggest challenge I have ever confronted, in fact, was the accusation from the public that I fabricated

information in one of my articles, which was concerned with the extra-marital affairs of a celebrity in

Hong Kong. Exceedingly stressed by public pressure and condemnation at that time, I fell victim to

depression. Fortunately, my family and colleagues showered me with support and public

misunderstanding was eventually rectified.

段落 3 My School Days

校園 When speaking of my school days, there is a lot to say. But like anyone of you, I was just an ordinary

生活 boy who liked playing basketball with classmates, and, playing tricks on teachers as well! It was a

shame to say but, my academic results were not satisfactory at all; or rather, terrible. After all, who

would like to study in their adolescence with other entertainment so readily available? Nevertheless,

this was my wrong thought. It was fortunate that I discovered the significance of studying and started

to work assiduously, along with the assistance from my respectable teachers. Finally, I came through

the HKCEE and the HKALE in flying colours and graduated from the School of Journalism of the

Chinese University. That is why I can become a reporter now.

21

段落 4 My dream

我的 In fact, I am very pleased to tell you that I have my dream come true already. Yes, that is right – to

夢想 become a reporter. It may sound ludicrous that while others’ dream is to become some kinds of CEO

who make a hefty sum of money or a lion-hearted firefighter who save lives, mine is to become a

small reporter doing dreary and monotonous clerical work day after day. But I can tell you: there is

no shame to pursue your own dream. However trivial or mediocre your dream may seem in others’

eyes, you should strive and fight for your chosen path of life. No matter how many times you fail,

stand up and keep endeavouring. Someday, you can prove how “BIG” your dream is!

段落 1 The best part of my job

工作最 Have you ever thought of the scenario after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake? Have you ever imagined

好之處 how bitter it is for those innocent children to suffer from the Iraq War? Reporters have long been

praised as “the kings without crowns”, and the best part of it, undoubtedly, must be the privilege to

unveil the truth to the general public and even people from all over the globe to arouse their

sympathy, awareness and attention to the international issues in particular, and obviously this is the

reason why I find my job very rewarding when compared to the others.

段落 2 The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my job

工作最 Frankly speaking, the biggest challenge I am confronted with must be the abysmal living conditions

大挑戰 and environment in the earthquake-stricken Wenchuan region in Sichuan. “Tofu construction” was

prevalent and everywhere was left in ruins and shacks. What do you think about the environment of

temporary shelters where frontline news reporters like us reside in? It was actually disgusting and full

of grisly insects! Nevertheless, we could do nothing but tolerate. That is the greatest challenge I have

ever faced in my job.

23

段落 3 My School Days

校園 When I was a junior form student, I was naïve and innocent like many of you now. At that time, I was

生活 indifferent towards current affairs that were happening in the world as I was born and raised in an

affluent family. Hardly did I develop any empathy towards the underprivileged citizens in other parts

of the globe. It was not until the occurrence of the Yugoslavia Civil Wars in the early 1990s that I was

motivated to explore the realm of international politics with some of my classmates. Through

partaking in a wide variety of activities ranging from video-making competitions to report-writing

competitions did I cultivate my journalistic skills as well as identity as a global citizen.

段落 4 My message to fellow schoolmates

勸勉 As an old saying goes, “Success means dedication.” Even though I am considered a prominent

reporter in Hong Kong, I have to overcome countless difficulties and challenges. Most importantly, I

am often questioned by my parents regarding the heavy workload of being a news reporter and the

experience of complete loneliness. All these have shaped my personality of not giving up easily.

With the imminence of the HKDSE and selection of university programmes, it is time you thought of

your future career paths and worked industriously for your blossoming future!

段落 1 The best part of my job

工作最 News reporting is not as easy as it seems despite the fact that most of my colleagues look effortless.

好之處 We have to collect information, write our scripts, rehearse and collaborate with our colleagues, not

once, but thousands of times over the year. It is like doing school projects every six hours. Yet, the

arduous work is what makes my job interesting. However, the best part of my job is on-site

interviews. Whenever important events or accidents happen, I am assigned with the duty to report

them to the public as soon and accurately as possible. The sense of fulfillment of collecting raw

information, summarizing it, and presenting as clearly as possible has become my personal goal every

day.

段落 2 The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my job

工作最 News reporting can be a lot more dangerous than you think. The biggest challenge I have ever

大挑戰 encountered in my career is that I was deployed to the Philippines to keep the audience updated on

the 823 Manila Hostage Crisis. Our van stationed about 20 metres away from the coach where a

group of Hong Kong tourists were held hostage by a Former Philippine policeman who was armed

with guns. A shot was fired, followed by a series of gunshots which forced us to retreat. Suddenly,

the car window cracked, and I felt a burning pain behind my ear, and blood started trickling down

the back of my neck. I was told later that if the bullet had passed into instead of beside my neck, I

would have died.

25

段落 3 My School Days

校園 You might have thought that I was a confident speaker even back in my school days, but the truth

生活 was, no matter how hard I tried, the best I could manage was to stutter. Even when I was called upon

to answer questions in a class, I felt butterflies in my stomach, not to mention speaking in public in

front of millions of viewers. However, my English teacher, Miss Chan, saw my potential in me, inviting

me to join the campus TV. At first, I was too afraid and only dared to write scripts for our student

reporters. With the continuous encouragement from Miss Chan, I finally plucked up courage and

started reporting. You know the rest of the story – I have been reporting news ever since.

段落 4 What does it take to become a good news reporter?

做記者 To become a good reporter, it does not only require brilliant language skills and a critical mind. No

的先決 matter what kinds of news reporters you choose to become, it is of paramount importance to have a

條件 kind heart and a right attitude. As a veteran reporter, my sole goal is to pursue truth. Nowadays, it is

not uncommon to see the paparazzi using long lens cameras to invade celebrities’ private lives. In

order to grasp the attention of the audience, they make up contents which harm other people and

ignore the feelings of victims, taking pictures of their bloody faces from car accidents. These are all

against journalistic Code of Conduct and something I frown upon. Do remember, if you choose to be

a good reporter, conscience is far more important than making a hefty sum of money.

段落 1 The best part of my job

工作最 The best part of my job is the opportunity it has given me to care about our community in different

好之處 aspects. Last summer, I covered a story about a poor 7-year-old kid whose parents had died in a

tragedy. To my delight, people were touched and over two million dollars were raised within a week

to help this poor kid out. I do think it is meaningful to arouse public awareness to care for the

underprivileged.

段落 2 The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my job

工作最 My biggest challenge ever faced was attempting to stop my tears running out in a report. Once I had

大挑戰 to interview a handicapped orphan who was abandoned by her parents. So sentimental was I that I

was moved to tears. It took a few moments until I could hold my tears back and finish the whole

interview. I had underestimated the importance of having full control of my emotion until I had to

report such a harrowing story.

27

段落 3 My School Days

校園 Despite not being one of the brightest students at school, I was not given up and was encouraged by

生活 my caring teachers to partake in an array of challenging activities, and one of them was called “Young

Reporters”, through which I developed my interest in being a reporter. Without any experience in

reporting, we were asked to interview people from all walks of life, ranging from property tycoons to

people dwelling in subdivided flats. Assisted by my teachers, I overcame the challenge and was given

the “Best Reporter Award”. It was my beloved teachers who provided me with the power and

strength to become who I am now, and I miss them.

段落 4 The power of determination

決心的 Contrary to what you might think, my path as a reporter is not a plain-sailing one. However, I believe

重要 in myself all along. Not performing well enough in my A-Level exam, I clenched my fist and gritted my

teeth and took the exam again to pursue my dream. Thankfully, I was admitted to the programme of

journalism at Baptist University of Hong Kong. Had I not been determined and persistent, I would not

have been what I am today. Remember, never give up hope and stay determined.

Picture composition (看圖作文) – 範例一

HKDSE English 2013 Q1

For question 1, write about 100 words for each photo.

You are taking part in a photo exhibition called ‘My Memories’. As part of the photo exhibition, you have

presented two photos. Now, you need to give a title to each and a brief explanation of why these photos are

meaningful to you.

A Child’s Dream

Back in the days of my primary school years, my teachers

installed a blackboard – instead of the shiny whiteboards in many

schools nowadays – in our classrooms. The blackboard had been a

significant part of my childhood: on it I recited class materials,

expressed my opinion and drew pictures to decorate the classroom.

The homely murkiness of that wooden plank captured all my

aspirations and imagination as a young child. Thus, I stopped to take

this photo one day when I visited a school in a backward village in

China. Completely immersed in her task, the little girl did not notice

me. To me, the blackboard was her tabula rasa – an untouched

realm full of potential. It was as if I was watching her mapping out

her future with the white chalk. This photo may appear ordinary, but

it represents a child’s untapped potential – the potential to learn, to

prosper and to dream big.

29

Joining Hands

Our civilization is built by the collective efforts of people. This

kind of interdependence and connection is figuratively presented in

this photo. I cherish the idea of cooperation. Thus, this photo has

become particularly meaningful to me as it demonstrates just that.

This photo was taken during one of my visits to a team-building camp

designed for companies which wish to strengthen the relationships

between their employees. As I took the photo from down below, the

team of co-workers put their hands together, synchronously

shouting “Yes!” with beaming smiles. Overwhelmed by that surge of

positivity and morale of cooperation, I took this photo, which has

since become a reminder of the importance of teamwork. Despite

our personal ambitions and aspirations, it is important for us to learn

to work with others and pursue a goal that benefits all together.

Turning a New Page

This photo captures my frustration when I was asked to write an

introduction of myself in English in front of the whole class when I

first came to Hong Kong. I was in primary three when my family

moved from Foshan, China, to this cosmopolitan city. My English was

terrible – at the age of eight, I still couldn’t memorize all the

alphabets. I can still vividly remember the giggles of my classmates

behind my back when I was struggling to write something sensible. I

clenched the chalk in my pathetic, fragile fingers and beads of sweat

were draining down my burning, crimson face. I was lost,

claustrophobic and ashamed, and with the soothing words from my

teacher I staggered back to my seat clumsily in shameful tears and

awe. But it is from that day that I told myself I need to work hard; it

is from that day that I understood the importance of persevering for

excellence,; it is from that day I vowed – I will achieve phenomenal

success and never be looked down upon again! This photo marks

the turning page of my childhood – probably my life – and from then

on, I studied extra hard to improve my English skills, and attained

great improvements. Now, this photo acts as a reminder of the once

frail and helpless girl I was, urging me to strive harder for myself and

my family, to keep learning and persevering.

31

Transformation and Acceptance

This photo was taken when I was selected by my secondary school

for a valuable chance of participating in an overseas exchange
programme. See the chubby girl on the left with a huge grin? That is
me. I have transformed from a shy girl to a cheerful, confident
teenager. We took this photo when we were about to leave the
ancient English school complex for the last time, with my English
buddies as well as my other schoolmates. When we joined hands, I
felt accepted and loved. I felt the blissful friendship that we
cultivated together. I felt that my hard work to improve myself had
paid off. I swept through their eyes – blue ones, brown ones, green
ones and black ones – and I could see acceptance from their irises.
No longer was I the outcast of his society, not even when I was
staying overseas. I had transformed and I was accepted by this
world. This photo captures the overwhelming moment of my
epiphany, captures my brilliant smile and captures the sweet hope I
held for a bright future. Every now and then I would lose myself
staring at this picture, remembering the hopes I held, reminding
myself that this world is a lovable place and with endeavours, we can
achieve what we want.

Breaking the Brick Wall

This photo captures the moment when I was trying to introduce

myself to my primary school classmates – an attempt to break the
adamant barrier between me and my classmates.

I was born in mainland China and hadn’t received any education on

English language until I came to Hong Kong and went to a local
primary school. English was extremely intimidating to me and hardly
could I understand a single word from my classmates or teachers
when they spoke in English. I was shy and I hid myself, feeling that
nobody understood the difficulties I was facing and nobody was
willing to help. Fortunately, I met Ms Young, my English teacher.

Ms Young was so benevolent that she offered me after school

tutorials on English and gave me great support academically and
emotionally. Her kindness, generosity and love helped me overcome
my fear towards English and I successfully came out of my comfort
zone.

This photo shows the moment when I was determined to actively get
to know my classmates by introducing myself using English. Although
my English was not good at all, I kept telling myself “Come on! You
can do this! “ in my mind while I was writing on the blackboard. This
is truly one of my bravest moments in my life. I often take this photo
out to remind myself of how tenacious I can be when I face setbacks
in life and Mr. Young’s benevolence. Had it not been for her help, I
would not have been bold enough to enhance my English and break
this adamant brick wall – the language barrier between me and my
classmates.
33

Sail with Peers

This photo has captured a memorable moment of growth for me and

some of my best friends.

This photo was taken when I was participating in a camp full of

teenagers from different countries and cultural backgrounds. In a
group of eight, our mission was to build a little boat using limited
materials like bamboo sticks and plastic containers and sail in the
ocean.

It was an extremely arduous task for us as none of us had any

experience related to building a boat. As time went by, a few groups
had already started their sails and we were still clueless and helpless.
An American boy in my group, Peter, accidentally broke a bamboo
stick. Furious and hopeless, I mindlessly shouted, “What are you
doing? You stupid American!” It was racist and extremely
inappropriate for me to say that. Offended and infuriated, Peter
punched me on my face and I immediately fought back. Luckily,
some of my group mates were cool enough to halt the fight and
demanded us to reflect upon our naïve behaviour. Feeling regretful,
I took back my offensive words and apologized to Peter.
Miraculously, we worked much more efficiently than before and
came up with a way to build the boat with one less bamboo stick.
Despite finishing the mission last, we all wore a smiley face and this
photo was taken before our voyage when we covered hands and
yelled at the top of our voice to support ourselves.

Every time I see this photo, it reminds me of the importance of

patience, understanding and mutual respect when working with
others. These three qualities can help us sail through storms of
arguments in our life voyage, forging unbreakable bonds with our
peers. This photo contains a lesson on friendship that cannot be
learnt from any textbooks in the world.

Inspirations from a Young Girl

In this photo features a diligent girl who hoped to disentangle

herself from poverty with knowledge. I met this girl during a

3-month education project which aimed to provide some basic

English training for poor village children. I used to think that I was

helping them, but it turned out that I was learning a lot from them.

Asked to write a sentence with the word “knowledge” on the

blackboard, the girl in the photo wrote “I dream of changing my

destiny with knowledge, and I promise I will not give up.” Every

student in the class then volunteered to tell me their dreams. Yes,

they were poor, but dreams were there. They inspired me to pursue

my dream of becoming a teacher and finally I realized it. I miss the

days I was with them.

35

Together We Achieve More

Have you ever thought of the true meaning of collaboration? This

photo perfectly illustrates the importance of teamwork. The photo

was taken five years ago, when I participated in a training camp

called “Outward Bound” to hone my interpersonal skills and

communication skills. Tough though the training was, we learnt a

lot. At the very beginning we met a lot of setbacks in such activities

as treasure hunts and orienteering. Being the worst group among all,

we thought of quitting the last activity, rock climbing. However, our

group leader cheered us all up, asking all of us to put our hands

together, and more importantly to enjoy it and learn from it. The

photo was taken just before the game started. Although we were not

the champion, we did succeed in finishing it, and we were all proud

of ourselves. We fully understood we could never achieve a common

goal without having good cooperation with our teammates together.

Linking, Bonding

段落 1 - 突出相片的象徵意義

This photo was taken on the annual Sports Day at school. It

seems to be nothing special, but it symbolizes the time when our

hearts were truly linked together.

段落 2 – 詳述事情,抒發感受

Our class spirit was not strong at all; we were not keen on

working as a team. On that day, we had to take part in a class relay

competition. Sadly, no one wanted to represent our class. Then our

monitor exclaimed, “We are a family! There is no excuse for us to

surrender to other classes!” All of a sudden, we perked up and were

fully “charged”. We covered hands and yelled at the top of our voice,

“6D Best!” And could you believe it? The girl at the left corner who

has the brightest smile used to be the quietest girl in the class!

Eventually, we won the race. Nothing will be a miracle if we are

united!
37

The First Word of Hope

段落 1 - 突出相片令人印象難忘

This might not be a striking image in your eyes, but to me it

definitely is. I can never forget this scene though it happened at the

age of 8. It just keeps flashing back in my mind.

段落 2 – 詳述事件背景

The photo was taken when I was on an exchange trip to an

impoverished region in Mainland China. I toured to a local school and

had lessons with indigenous children. The little, frail girl Mary in the

photo was sitting beside me. She had such beautiful eyes. Then she

asked me, “Could you teach me how to write my name?” Feeling

perplexed, I held her bony hand and taught her how to write it. Not

long after, her teacher asked if anybody wished to write down his/her

name on the blackboard.

38

The First Word of Hope

段落 3– 交代事件結局和感想

Without a second thought, Mary volunteered. Only at that

moment did I realize she had a guiding stick with her – she was

blind! Slowly she found a chalk, wrote her name down with her

trembling hand and said, “Thank you Chris, no one has taught me

how to write before!” Tears blurred my vision, and no words could

precisely describe how grateful I felt. Since then, this photo has

always been my source of motivation.

Introduction of a Place (地方介紹) – 範例一

HKDSE English 2014 Q1

The Local History Newsletter is a newsletter about the history of Hong Kong. Every month, it prints short articles
about special places in Hong Kong. You have been asked to write an article about an old village called Lucky
Village. Write your article using the three headings provided. You can use the headings in any order.

- Life in Lucky Village 40 years ago

- An event that changed Lucky Village
- What Lucky Village is famous for

段落 1 Life in Lucky Village 40 years ago

40 年前幸運村的生活 1. 幸運村概述 -- 無科技的世界

At that time, it was still an unplugged world: no iPads, no E-books, no new

games like Flappy Bird. Every “Lucky Villager” lived in a simple way.

2. 幸運村村民的工作

Most of them worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the plastic manufacturing

factories nearby in Pok Fu Lam and returned home afterwards to cook a

mouth-watering meal for their little kids.

3. 幸運村村民的生活

One thing was rather unique about Lucky Village – the large playground area

on the 2nd floor, which is rarely seen nowadays in those small-medium flats.

For children, it was a heaven. They could play see-saws, stickers, rubber

bands, hide-and-seek, you name it. Unlike the extravagant luxury flats

nowadays, even though the hygiene condition was not that satisfactory and

people were not as wealthy as property tycoons like Li Ka-shing, life in Lucky

Village in the 1970s was simple and blissful.

40

段落 2 An event that changed Lucky Village

改變幸運村的事件 1. 挑戰

Green tea latte, Caramel Macchiato, New York Cheesecake… Do you enjoy

these products of Starbucks? Lucky Villagers probably do not. Two years ago,

the dim sum teahouse Cha-Kee in the village was facing closure and would be

taken over by the coffee chain store – Starbucks. The news spread quickly in

Lucky Village and provoked an outcry. “Cha-Kee is our collective memories. I

especially love the glutinous rice with chicken in lotus leaf,” said one of the

villagers.

2. 渡過難關

Eventually, a host of Lucky Villagers donated money, filed complaints and

even resorted to petition to support Cha-Kee’s survival against Starbucks. This

large-scale event not only strengthened the bondage in the neighbourhood,

but also manifested the meaning of team spirit. “Great things are not done by

one person, but a team of people.” Steve Jobs’ adage is also applicable in this

case and finally they succeeded.

41

段落 3 What Lucky Village is famous for

幸運村為何著名 1. 和諧的鄰舍關係

Lucky Village is one of the oldest villages in the territory, yet it is not solely

famous for its long history, but warmth. Every month, there is a regular

meeting and gathering of all villagers in the large playground area. They share

their meals, chit-chat about various current affairs, exchange their ideas and

feelings during the gathering. Such is the harmonious and jovial atmosphere

pervading in Lucky Village that captures the attention of local citizens.

2. 星巴克危機

Aside from this, the aforementioned “Starbucks crisis” was also reported by

Apple Daily, which aroused public attention to this little village.

3. 幸運村精神 – 溫暖和愛

I would say, Lucky Village is reputable for its warmth and love – It is not

simply a name, or a fame, but a spirit.

Introduction of a Place (地方介紹) – 範例二

段落 1 Life in Lucky Village 40 years ago

40 年前幸運村的生活 1. 農耕生活

On the pasture stands a horde of cows. Vitally important are these cows to

peasants as farming was the bread and butter of villagers in Lucky Village. All

the kiths and kins farmed together amid sweltering hot or freezingly cold

weather. Villagers toiled and moiled to grow crops for their subsistence.

2. 消閒活動

Harsh as their work might seem, they indeed led a leisurely life. Adults sang

folk songs while children burst into laughter when playing hide and seek.

After a typical day of work with blood, sweat and tears, villagers had their

freshly harvested vegetables for dinner.

段落 2 An event that changed Lucky Village

改變幸運村的事件 1. 介紹發展計畫

Gone are the days when villagers led a primitive life. As the government

decided to develop Lucky Village, hosts of people were paying visits to the

village. The government endeavoured to turn Lucky Village into a suburban

resort in which tourists could partake in an array of activities.

2. 計劃詳情

A hefty sum of fortune was expended on building hotels as well as

renovating infrastructures and entertainment facilities. Canoes, handy

farming tools as well as swimming caps were purchased, to name but a few. A

trace of excitement was added to the serene environment.

43

段落 3 What Lucky Village is famous for

幸運村為何著名 1. 有機耕種

Highly celebrated is the organic farming and healthy eating workshops

organized by the villagers. Those who patronize the workshops are offered

the opportunity to work with cows. Many a visitor finds the experiment

imbued with thrills and spills as they are afraid of the cows, though they are

tamed.

2. 健康飲食工作坊

Having sown seeds, cut weeds and applied organic fertilizers, visitors will

proceed to cooking mouth-watering vegetarian dishes. Visitors can’t fail to

love the organic spices!

Introduction of a Place (地方介紹) – 範例三

段落 1 What Lucky Village is famous for

幸運村為何著名 1. 逃過颱風厄運

Lucky Village is famous for its good luck and this is how the village was

named. A long time ago, a devastating typhoon caused many deaths and

great economic losses in the old villages nearby. Fortunately, all the people

and properties in Lucky Village were not damaged. After this incident, Lucky

Village started to be famous because of its good luck.

2. 遠近馳名的小食檔

Also, there is an old couple selling traditional Chinese snacks in a street stall in

the village and the snacks are recommended my many local magazines. Many

people visit there because they want to try these snacks and the Lucky Village

become more well-known owing to the delicious and famous snacks.

段落 2 Life in Lucky Village 40 years ago

40 年前幸運村的生活 1. 簡單的溝通方式

Unlike nowadays, the people living in the Lucky Village 40 years ago

communicated through face-to-face interactions and this led to harmonious

relationships between neighbours.

2. 純樸和諧的鄉村生活

At the centre of the village, there was a big area and the people in the village

liked to meet there after having dinner. This was also the place where the kids

played together, the adults sang together and the elderly sat and talked

together. During some traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Chinese New

Year, all of the people in the village would like to meet and had a meal

together and the atmosphere was great. The life in Lucky Village was simple

and harmonious.
45

段落 3 An event that changed Lucky Village

改變幸運村的事件 1. 介紹發展計畫

5 years ago, the government launched a plan to remove the Lucky Village due

to the lack of land for development and intended to transform the Lucky

Village into a city. Most of the people agreed to move out, including the old

couples who sell the traditional snacks.

2. 呼籲人們珍惜幸運村

The Lucky Village became empty and rarely had people visit it. As a result, its

special features started to fade. The removal plan is going to start next year

and the village will disappear afterwards. Let’s visit this precious village

before it is too late and keep a record of this unique village.

Part A Writing (2015)

For question 1, write about 200 words.

1. A recent article in the Young Post suggested that an 8:00 a.m. start to the school day makes

students feel tired and sleepy. Write to the editor of the Young Post expressing your views on

the following:

- why students feel tired

- whether or not a 9:00 a.m. start will solve the problem

Some parts of the letter have been given to you.

範例 1

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的
I am writing to express my views on why students often feel tired nowadays.
(介紹)
2. 背景介紹 + 開啟下文
Feeling drowsy at the beginning of any given day, students’ learning efficiency
can be severely impaired. As they are future pillars of our society, we should look
into this issue carefully for the betterment of the community.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句
Insufficient sleep may be one of the causes which lead to tiredness of students.
(原因)
2. 詳細解釋
As the recent article stated, an 8:00 a.m. start to the school day inevitably limits
their sleeping hours. It is believed by scientists that a healthy person should sleep
for more than eight hours per day. I am certain that most Hong Kong students
now cannot meet this standard. They may have countless explanations to this, be
it the ceaseless homework distributed by schools, or the extra tutorial exercises.
No prizes for guessing, their bodies cannot fully recuperate from the work with
the given sleeping time. Thus, they feel tired and sleepy next morning, and the
vicious circle continues.
47

Paragraph 3 1. 相反觀點 + 讓步

Perhaps, a 9:00 a.m. start to the school day may solve the problem seemingly, by
(觀點)
extending students’ sleeping hours.

2. 反駁句

Yet, insufficient sleep is only the superficial reason.

3. 詳細解釋

We should not overlook their sleeping quality. No matter how long we sleep,

tiredness is still there if the rest is of low quality. As far as I know, many students

are constantly worrying about their academic results even during their sleep.

Such an anxious mental state has contributed to their poor sleeping quality.

Hardly can they recharge their batteries physically and psychologically. Therefore,

I believe that the importance attached to academic results in our exam-oriented

education system is the culprit why students feel tired frequently. A 9:00 a.m.

start to school days may alleviate the problem temporarily, but its effects are

minimal. Only by reducing students’ stress can we bring this thorny problem to

an end.

Paragraph 4 1. 概括上文

With students’ preoccupation with academic pursuit, their deteriorating

(總結)
psychological health is alarming. Should we ignore the fact that blindly pursuing

scores and grades makes students tired mentally, their tiredness will persist.

2. 建議

Extensive education reforms may bail students out of this grave situation and I

sincerely hope that they can soon get rid of their tiredness and drowsiness,

studying energetically and blissfully.

範例 2

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的

I am writing in response to the article in the Young Post about the early start to
(介紹)
the school day which makes students feel tired and sleepy.

2. 表達立場

Personally, I share the same view with the writer and would also like to express

my opinions on this issue.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

I believe that there are two major reasons why students feel tired. To start with,
(原因)
students are not having sufficient rest.

2. 詳細解釋

As a school day starts at 8:00 a.m., students will have to wake up at 7:00 a.m. or

earlier to prepare for the school day. It is worth noting that under the

exam-oriented system in Hong Kong, they often need to burn the midnight oil to

complete their assignments and do revision. As a result, students will not be able

to get at least 8 hours of sleep as suggested by healthcare professionals.

Arguably, getting enough sleep is vital as it allows our body to take good rest

after a whole day of toiling and moiling and reenergizes us. If students do not

have ample sleep, hardly can they work efficiently and concentrate in class,

which will jeopardize their academic performance.

3. 總結句

This explains why students often feel tired and drowsy.

50

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

In addition, many students do not have time to have breakfast as the school day
(原因)
commences so early at 8:00 a.m.

2. 詳細解釋

I hold a firm belief that it is difficult for many students to wake up early to have

breakfast in summer, not to mention winter. Most of them prefer sleeping for an

extra thirty minutes to having breakfast as the school day starts so early. Apart

from getting enough sleep, having breakfast is also essential for us as it injects

energy into our body, enabling us to work all day long. Skipping their breakfast,

barely will they have energy to maintain their focus throughout the school day.

3. 總結句

This is also the reason why they often feel tired and sleepy.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

In view of the causes of why students feel tired, I firmly believe that a 9:00 a.m.
(觀點)
start to the school day will solve the problem.

2. 詳細解釋

With the commencement of the school day delayed by one hour, students will

have extra time of sleep and sufficient time to have breakfast prior to going to

school, acquiring enough ample energy for a whole day of arduous work. Only by

having sufficient rest and breakfast will students become more attentive in class

instead of feeling tired and drowsy.

3. 總結句

A 9:00 a.m. start would effectively dig into the root of the problem, providing

them with their vigour and drive in their pursuit of academic excellence.
51

Paragraph 4 1. 概括上文

Apparently, it is vitally important for students to concentrate in class with a view

(總結)
to acquiring knowledge at school.

2. 展望將來

It is to be hoped that a 9:00 start of the school day will be implemented in the

foreseeable future and solve the current problem.

範例 3

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的

As one of your local readers and an ordinary secondary student, I am writing in

(介紹)

response to the article about the worrying trend of students sleeping during

lessons.

2. 表達立場

Depressing yet common as it may seem, many students put their heads down on

desks and take a catnap during lessons. At the first glance, many would attribute

this worrying scenario to early start to school. But after second thought, the

reasons are not that simple.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

Most, if not all, students feel tired mentally but not physically.
(原因 1)

2. 詳細解釋

Many teachers still cling to one-way teaching nowadays, which makes the

students feel bored. It will be tedious if the teachers just read out passages or

theory without utilizing other more interactive approaches. For students sitting

in the seats, the sound of teachers is nothing but a lullaby, urging them to sleep.
53

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Another reason is that there may be too much compulsory extra-curricular

(原因 2)
activities for students to participate in after school.

2. 詳細解釋

Students always adhere to the instructions from their schools. I understand that

many schools arrange various activities for students to join from Monday to

Friday in order to enhance the wholesome development of our students.

Nevertheless, this results in students leaving school late at night and burning the

midnight oil to finish loads of homework and revision.

3. 總結句

Without adequate sleep, students feel exhausted during lessons.

Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

As such, a 9:00 a.m. start may not be efficient enough to solve the problem of
(觀點)
students’ exhaustion at the root.

2. 詳細解釋

Will the lessons become more interesting and enlightening after waking up one

hour later? An emphatic no. It is of utmost importance for schools and teachers

to keep abreast of social changes and incorporate more interactive teaching

techniques like dramas, group discussion, presentation, you name it, into classes.

And it seems unrealistic, if not ridiculous, to sacrifice students resting time for

extra-curricular activities. Balanced development is important without doubt, but

we need to strike a balance between rest and extra-curricular activities. Halting

the compulsory participation in extra-curricular activities and shortening the

duration is a feasible solution to the problem.

54

Paragraph 5 1. 概括上文

Hardly can students learn anything from lessons if they lose their concentration.
(總結)
2. 展望將來

It is a wake-up call for both schools and students to make adjustment to the

existing school policies.

範例 4

上款 Dear Editor,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫信目的
As a regular reader of your column, I have recently been brought to the attention
(介紹)
that a recent article in your column suggested that an 8:00 a.m. start to the
school day makes students feel tired and sleepy.
2. 表達立場
In light of this, a 9:00 a.m. start may ease this problem. Yet, from my point of
view, it is patently clear that this measure will certainly be of little use at all.

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句
Beyond doubt, it is a common sight that students always feel tired and sleepy.
(原因 1)
However, is it only correlated with the 8:00 a.m. start to the school day? The
answer is of course “No”. The crux of this problem lies in the busy daily routines
and bad habits of the students.
2. 詳細解釋
Under this ossified education system in Hong Kong, students pursue excellent
academic results through joining multifarious tutorial classes. Even though they
have attended the school for nearly a whole day, they still have to take part in the
tutorial classes after school. In addition to the heavy burden of everyday
homework on students, they have no alternative but to stay up the whole night
and finish their homework before the deadline, avoiding receiving punishment
from the teachers. Aside from doing homework for the whole night, some of the
students keep playing computer games for the night, which provides an incentive
for them not to sleep.
3. 總結句
It is obvious that the daily routine and bad habits are the main culprits of
deterring students from going to bed early, giving rise to the phenomenon that
most of the students feel tired and sleepy all the time.
56

Paragraph 3 1. 過渡 + 立場

In view of the main reason why students feel tired, I think it is quite conceivable
(觀點)
that why I frown upon the suggestion of a 9:00 a.m. start to the school day.

2. 詳細解釋

This measure may have a short term effect; however, in the long run, it has no

sustainable effectiveness – as it cannot hit the nub of the problem. As I have

mentioned, the causes of students feeling exhausted can be attributed to several

factors, with the students’ hectic daily routine and heavy workload being the

most contributory one. A 9:00 a.m. start may provide an extra hour for the

students to take a rest in the short run while in the long run, the students may

take this extra hour for granted, and they may think that the school encourages

them to study or play computer games and go to bed late.

3. 總結句

Hence, it is indisputable that a 9:00 a.m. start cannot address this problem

thoroughly and exhaustively.

Paragraph 4 1. 歸納全文

After all, the root cause of the matter lies in the busy daily routine of students,
(總結)
making them always feel exhausted.

2. 期望作結

I earnestly hope that effective strategies can be mapped out for the sake of the
students’ physical and mental health.

Chris Wong

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

(following School Let’s talk about the importance of following school rules first.

rules) 2. 詳細解釋

Wondering if school rules have anything to do with success and an enjoyable school

life? Well, the answer lies in their functions. A school is a miniature of society. Just as

there are laws and regulations maintaining social order, school rules are essential for

the operation of a school. Following them, to start with, helps reduce conflicts among

us. Say the school no longer bans fighting. Without doubt, some aggressive students

will begin to bully others, and soon everyone will be the victims of violence. School

rules are thus a sort of lubricant promoting our well-being by regulating our

behaviour. School rules also prepare us for adult life. As a mature and responsible

person, an adult ought to abide by the law. Following school rules is a kind of a

rehearsal and arouses our awareness of law and order. Apart from reducing conflicts

and raising our awareness, following school rules also helps us leave a better first

impression. Others may deduce your traits and personalities from how you treat

school rules. Take late arrival as an example. It may indicate that you aren’t a

punctual and responsible student, thus leaving a bad impression and tarnish your

image in the eyes of others.

3. 總結句

To wrap up, following these rules is a prerequisite for success and an enjoyable

school life.
62

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Interpersonal The second issue I’d like to discuss is the importance of interpersonal relationships.

relationships 2. 詳細解釋

Their importance may sound all too familiar to you, as I’m sure you have heard about

it from time to time. It’s nevertheless, worth reiterating because of the importance.

To start with, through these relationships can we share our feeling and gain

emotional support. I’m pretty sure what you want most when you’re upset is the

comfort from your friends. Indeed, as all of us are social animals, interpersonal

relationships play a crucial role in our daily life. In essence, in a relationship we

benefit from each other, akin but not equivalent to the concept of exchange in

economics. In a friendship, we support and offer assistance for one another. Besides,

we can get to learn about social skills, which are no doubt the key to success. For

example, we may learn from a relationship with our classmates how to ask for help

without others having a feeling of being ordered. When interacting with others, we

can also gain a deeper understanding of how to better communicate and negotiate. In

addition, this also enhances our self-esteem. I’m quite sure you haven’t pondered

over these benefits but I think it we will be more confident and when gaining peer

recognition and acceptance, won’t we? This, to put it in the jargons of Liberal Studies,

consolidates our sense of fulfillment and security, thereby enhancing our

self-esteem.

3. 總結句

All in all, interpersonal relationships are essential to achieving success and leading an

enjoyable life.

Paragraph 4 1. 祝願聽眾

Letter to the principal - Proposal (範例一)

HKDSE English 2017 Q1 (Letter to the principal)

You are the chairperson of the Social Service Club in your school. The school would like to develop closer links

with the community. Write a letter to your principal, Ms Lee, proposing a new community project that the

school can carry out with a home for the elderly in your district.

In your letter persuade your principal to accept your project by

(i) describing one activity that could be carried out, and

(ii) identifying the benefits for the elderly home.

Sign your letter Chris Wong.

打招呼 Dear Mr. Lee,

Paragraph 1 1. 寫作目的

I am writing to propose a new community project for our school on behalf of the Social Service
介紹
Club.

2. 交代背景

Knowing that our school is aiming to develop closer links with the community, our club has come

up with a project named “Warmth to the Elderly” in collaboration with an elderly home called

“Sunny Nursing Home”.

3. 開啟下文

In the following, I would like to introduce an activity of the project and the benefits for the elderly

home, hoping that the school will find it meaningful to run.

68

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

After our discussion with “Sunny Nursing Home”, it is suggested that a computer class can be
活動介紹
organized for the elderly there.

2. 建議原因

As we all know, the senior citizens in the elderly home sometimes feel lonely and depressed. With

their loved ones being preoccupied with work and study, they are in lack of opportunities to

connect to the outside world. In view of this, a computer class would be a therapeutic activity for

the elderly.

3. 建議詳情

Our students are proficient in the use of information technology and advanced electronic gadgets.

They could be the instructors in the class, teaching the senior citizens to carry out simple

computer operations and use basic functions on the computers, such as typing Chinese

characters, surfing the net and watching videos and TV dramas. Through this class can our

students help the aged reconnect to the world outside the elderly home. For example, they could

learn how to use Gmail and various social media websites like Facebook and Weibo to

communicate with their children and grandchildren. With a view to enlarging their social

network, they can even make new friends on these websites. It is also worth noting that the

elderly can keep abreast of the events happening in the world and entertain themselves with the

IT skills acquired from the class. As senior citizens are easily exhausted and their attention span is

short, it is recommended that each training session should last for one hour.
69

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

There are several benefits that the project of “Warmth to the Elderly” can bring to the elderly
活動好處 1

home. To commence with, the project can enhance the atmosphere of the elderly home, making it

more harmonious.

2. 背景

Lacking warmth and love, the senior citizens in the elderly home often feel spiritually empty and

hopeless. Without any means to express their dissatisfaction and frustration, it is not uncommon

for them to lose temper. Last month, for example, an elderly man fought with another old lady

in the elderly home and both of them suffered from injuries.

3. 詳細解釋論點

It is our firm belief that the computer course can address this problem and improve the

atmosphere of the elderly home. As mentioned above, the class can enable the senior citizens to

communicate with their loved ones. With their fragile souls warmed by their children and

grandchildren, they will be spiritually fulfilled and have better mental well-being. As a result,

tempers are less likely to flare and conflicts among the senior citizens can be minimized.

4. 總結句

With the harmonious atmosphere in Sunny Nursing Home, the workload of the staff can be

lightened, smoothening the operation of the elderly home.

70

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Equally worth noting is that our community project can enhance the reputation of the elderly
活動好處 2

home.

2. 背景

Unlike some elderly homes in Hong Kong, the mission of Sunny Nursing Home is to “provide senior

citizens with warmth and a fruitful life”. Through organizing this meaningful computer course and

connecting the elderly to the outside world can we achieve this goal.

3. 詳細解釋論點

With media coverage and online discussion, the residents in our neighbourhood and Hong Kong

will know about the details of the project, realizing that the staff members of the elderly home are

enthusiastic about helping the aged and do their utmost to provide a harmonious and blissful

environment for them. With a better reputation, the elderly home can entice more people to send

their elderly parents there, increasing its customer base and revenue in the long run.

Paragraph 5 1. 期望建議得到採納

It is high time for us to make the first step to develop closer links with the community. It is
總結
sincerely hoped that our proposal will be adopted by the school, benefitting the elderly as well as

the elderly home. Thank you for your attention.

Paragraph 1 1. 寫作目的

I am writing on behalf of the Social Service Club to propose a new community project helping an

with the community. The details are as follows:

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

The proposed project aims to provide an opportunity for students to interact with and understand
活動介紹
the nursing home.

2. 建議原因

There are dozens of elderly people residing in the nursing home and it is our conviction that more

frequent interaction with these dwellers is the key to building up bonds with them.
73

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

It is recommended that the concert should be held in a weekday afternoon.

活動介紹
2. 建議原因

The elderly will be the audience and students will be the performers The performance will include

songs from the 1960s and the 1970s, like “Below the Lion Rock” and “The Moon Represents My

Heart”, which most senior citizens are familiar with. As our school is one of the top schools in

terms of musical talents, with numerous champions of the Inter-school Music Festival, it will not

be a burden for students to rehearse and play the melodies vividly in front of the elderly. During

the concert, the senior citizens will be encouraged to sing these famous songs together and I am

convinced that they will form the warmest resonance, which will be a symphony across

generations.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

It is worth noting that the meaningful mini-concert will provide the elderly with warmth and
活動好處
energize them.

2. 背景

The senior citizens living in elderly homes are usually those whose families cannot take care of

them during the day. What lack most is warmth and energy.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Our students possess these invaluable qualities that can benefit them. The genre of songs chosen,

as illustrated above, is of their generation’s taste, potentially triggering their collective memories

of their youth days. I believe not only can they realize our warmth and hospitality with the choice

of songs, but they can immerse themselves in the merriment of music. The ultimate outcome of

this activity is the memory that our students and elderly people can share together. On one hand,

our students can have deeper understanding of the community. On the other hand, the aged can

draw a colourful page in their monotonous lives after retirement.

2. 交代背景

As the chairperson of the Social Service Club, I understand the significance of developing closer

bonds with the community, which is not only beneficial to our students but also our society.

3. 開啟下文

In line with the school’s mission, the details of the project will be as follows.
76

Paragraph 2 1. 標題句

The project will include a series of activities in which our students will become volunteers.
活動介紹
2. 建議詳情

One of the featured activities in the project is called the “Handicraft Festival”. Our committee

members will pick some handicraft items for the elderly to try out, ranging from origami to

rainbow bottles, under the guidance of our volunteers. The elderly could keep their finished

products after the tutorial session so as to decorate their living space and beautify it. In order to

minimize the impacts on our students’ studies, it is recommended that the activity should be held

on Saturday afternoons after the end of the final examination.

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

The project could bring an array of benefits for the elderly home. Firstly, it can help the elderly
活動好處 1
become connected with the community, which can bring merriment to them.

2. 背景

Senior citizens residing in elderly homes are often isolated from the community, feeling bored and

having nothing to do in their daily life.

3. 詳細解釋論點

Yet, with our kind-hearted volunteers visiting them and providing them with warmth, the elderly

can chat with us and have fun during the tutorial sessions. Knowing more about the pastimes of

the new generation and the latest news in our society, they can also share with us their stories in

the past and valuable life experiences.

4. 總結句

Not only does this add spice to the dreary life of senior citizens, this is conducive to building their

sense of belonging to the community.

77

Paragraph 3 1. 標題句

Besides, the tutorials will also be beneficial in keeping the minds of the elderly active.
活動好處 2
2. 背景

Due to the aging, most senior citizens suffer from chronic diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s

disease. According to some research, frequent participation in activities can keep the mind of the

aged active, slowing their degeneration process.

3. 詳細解釋論點

In our new project, the elderly can try to make different handicrafts in our tutorials, which involve

coordination of the body as well as problem-solving processes. In the course of making origami

and rainbow bottles, the senior citizens living in the elderly will have to overcome various

challenges and cooperate with their teammates and our volunteers.

4. 總結句

Through completing the tutorial sessions can they energize their mind and gain a sense of

satisfaction.

Paragraph 4 1. 標題句

Lastly, the project can alleviate the burden of the staff working in the elderly home.
活動好處 3
2. 背景

As mentioned above, many senior citizens are plagued by brain degeneration. Also, some of them

have low mobility, requiring the intensive care by staff members. Hence, it is difficult for them to

arrange activities for the elderly.

3. 詳細解釋論點

With our volunteers’ participation, we can help out in organizing the events and providing

guidance to the elderly. This can help reduce the heavy workload of the staff members.
78

Paragraph 5 1. 期望建議得到採納

With the above benefits, we believe that our community project can allow our school to develop

1.1 Academic Life

Write about one subject that you enjoyed studying or found challenging.

1. 標題句

In my six-year secondary school life, Chinese was my favourite subject and Miss Wong was my beloved

Chinese teacher.

2. 用其他老師作對比

As Class 6C is the elite class of the school, what we faced every day are ceaseless assignments, a large

number of tests and examinations as well as the stern faces of teachers.

3. 刻劃老師用心教學

However, Miss Wong cared about the feeling of all of us. With her interactive teaching approach, I was

immersed in the merriment of learning Chinese poems and often imagined the magnificent scenery

portrayed in the poems. As an inquisitive student, I often asked her about various aspects of the Chinese

culture, such as Confucianism and Taoism during the lunchtime and after school. Although it was

challenging for me to memorize all the proses and poems taught in Chinese textbooks and often got

unsatisfactory results, Miss Wong didn’t give me up. On the contrary, she sacrificed her leisure time,

responding to my questions and teaching me patiently on Whatsapp. Touched by her enthusiasm about

teaching, I worked harder and achieved brilliant results in the mock examination. How wonderful it was!

There is no doubt that I enjoyed studying Chinese due to Miss Wong.

1.2 Student Life

Write about what you will miss most about being a student in Class 6C

1. 標題句

Apart from the academic life and the merriment of Chinese lessons, being a student in Class 6C was

unforgettable. What I will miss most is the solidarity showcased by all of us.

2. 描寫比賽前的衝突

Can you see the smiles of all of us on the photo? Do you remember we practised cheerleading before the

Sports Days? Do you remember we prepared for the inter-class singing contest before the Last Day?

Ahead of the singing contest, we had a heated debate about which song we should select and criticized

each other.

3. 描寫團結氣氛

However, our Chinese teacher and class teacher, Miss Wong, insisted that we should unite in order to

fight for glory and gave us clear guidance. For those who are talented in music, they could choose the

song; for those who possess excellent leadership skills, they were in charge of leading the rehearsal;

for those who are artistically-gifted, they were responsible for designing the costumes. Thanks to Miss

Wong’s outstanding leadership, we knew how to distribute the work and realized the significance of

unity. With our flawless performance in the school hall, we managed to impress the adjudicators, the

teachers, as well as the students, winning the championship trophy and ending our beautiful secondary

school life on a high note. From the photo, you can see our sweet smiles and jubilant faces. There is no

doubt our swan song made our class united and I am really proud of being a member of the 6C family!

4. 期望作結

Hope that everyone of us can achieve brilliant results in the HKDSE and have a bright future!

1.1 Academic Life

Write about one subject that you enjoyed studying or found challenging.

1. 標題句

To me, English has always been the subject that I am most fond of.

2. 描寫英文吸引之處

One thing about the language that never ceases to surprise me is the astonishing co-existence of

complexity and simplicity, which is also why I enjoyed immersing myself in the wondrous world of

English so much. With English, you can convey intricate messages with simple and direct language, just

as you can infuse your ideas with a graceful touch of sophistication and fancy wordings. English is also

more than just a language; it tells the faces of a vast collection of different cultures across the world, and

by listening to someone speaking, you can tell from the accent which region one belongs to and what

cultural background one bears. Undoubtedly, learning English in school could get slightly tedious with all

the suffocating piles of schoolwork and exam practices stacking up on my desk, but exploring the English

subject is never confined to a mere classroom, or an examination.

3. 期望作結

I believe I will continue to explore the wonders of this language, international, common yet no less

splendid, in my university studies.

1.2 Student Life

Write about what you will miss most about being a student in Class 6C

1. 標題句

The fraternity among 6C classmates is certainly what I will miss the most.

2. 描寫團結氣氛

Surrounded by the stifling ocean of textbooks and endless exercises, my classmates never forgot to cheer

on each other and lend each other their helping hands whenever needed. Although to a certain extent,

we were all contenders in this cut-throat academic race, despite all the stress and all the ups and downs,

we all pushed together as one and maintained our friendship as we went down this treacherous and

difficult path of academic pursuit hand in hand. As a member of 6C, you never feel like a marginalized

outcast. Instead, there are always warm smiles, soothing embraces and heartwarming pep talks which

encourage you to stand up and fight for another day.

3. 期望作結

Going our separate ways is inevitable at some point. However, I wish the beautiful memory of being a

member of this wonderful class would be engraved in my heart as a piece of incandescent reminiscence.

I have never experienced such a bad service and I have promised myself that I am not going to

visit this restaurant again in my life! I now recall my awful dining experience with my beloved

family members yesterday. It was a totally disappointing experience!

Thanks to the ad-hoc promotions done on social media platforms, I decided to make an advanced

booking at the restaurant for celebrating my father’s 60th birthday this year. At first, I thought I

was fortunate as the restaurant offered us a table near the window, which allowed us to enjoy the

beautiful and tranquil Victoria Harbour in front of us. However, upon our arrival, a staff member

suddenly told us that the original table was then unavailable as it had been reserved by a bigger

family. We were so exasperated at that time and complained to the manager. What was beyond

our imagination was how irresponsible he was when responding to us. Instead of showing their

sincere apology or offering us some coupons as compensation, he simply allocated us to the very

dark and noisy corner of the restaurant! And this was only the beginning of the nightmare!

Given its citywide popularity brought by its Michelin label, many foreign visitors and local diners

pay visit to this restaurant in order to try out their dim sums. Perhaps this was also the first

Sunday after the government lifted the regulation on social distancing due to the outbreak of

the coronavirus. The usual crowd re-emerged once again! There were so many uncivilized locals

shouting around and even taking off their face masks before their dishes arrived! I really cannot
96

believe my family and I would encounter such an appalling experience in such a high-class

restaurant! In fact, what we were worrying about was the hygiene issue as the restaurant could

easily become the breeding ground of pneumonia.

That said, as we had ordered our food, we could only continue waiting and hope that we would

finish our meal as soon as possible. Luckily, many of the dishes could still slightly compensate us as

they were mouthwatering. Although we needed to wait for a long time, it was understandable as

the dim sums had been freshly prepared. Some of them, like egg tarts were delectable as the

texture was well-controlled through an optimal mix of egg yolk, milk as well as flour. Meanwhile,

many of the ingredients incorporated into other dim sums like prawns, siu mai and beef balls

were impeccably mixed. They were definitely not coming from those pre-packaged purchases that

can make people detect a frozen taste when eating. We really appreciate the effort made by the

chefs during the preparation process. When all our meals were served on our desk, they were all

in good shapes. Apparently, cooking is not simply a mundane and mechanical task with endless

repetition. To them, they had surely humanized and added in life to every single dish! If you

savoured every piece of dim sums there, you would be impressed by the magic touch of the chefs!
97

You all may then wonder why I have reservation when it comes to recommending this restaurant.

In fact, another nightmare occurred when we were served with our pre-ordered dessert. Although

we had planned to order the red bean soup as it is their signature dish beforehand, they

eventually served us with a mixture of red and green bean soup, claiming that they had realized

a shortage of red beans in their kitchen. The major problem here was that the staff was

irresponsible. As the members of such a luxurious restaurant, they should always uphold their

professionalism and act in line with the interests of the customers. However, what they were

showing to us then was very disappointing! They were simply making changes at the last minute.

This is totally ridiculous! Having achieved a prestigious label for its food doesn’t mean that they

could improvise their services and were immune from criticism.

As a customer, I believe every dining experience is a holistic one. Food is merely one of the many

variables affecting our appetite. What Dim Sum One was showing to us was violating the sound

traditional Chinese culture demonstrated by the chefs and the food. I’m pretty sure if no

substantial improvement were made, there would only be more and more complaints of similar

natures here. So if I were you, I would carefully consider whether I should follow others and take

a few superficial shots here for “likes” on my Instagram! Or I should spend the same amount of

money on a more customer-oriented restaurant in the near future.

After a visit to the new hot potato of the media last Friday night, I am now a diehard fan of this

fantastic restaurant!

This Chinese-style restaurant located in Central has been patronized by passionate foodies since

its opening on March 15. For me, the most remarkable component of my dining experience was

doubtlessly its food. To start with, we ordered a dish of shrimp dumplings and some chicken feet.

The shrimps were perfectly seasoned and I could taste how it was freshly alive moments ago.

While the chicken feet raised our appetite with the spicy aroma of chilli, pork, soy sauce and

other seasonings. Its taste was a surprise, with the sweet and spicy skin as well as the soft and the

easily chewed bones constituting the best chicken feet I have ever savoured. After that, we

ordered a dish of seafood fried rice and a bowl of chicken congee, the most acclaimed dishes of

Dim Sum One. While the waitress was slowly approaching us from the end of the corridor, I

couldn’t describe how thrilled I was to taste this legendary dish. The fried rice looked as perfect,

with the rice moistened with a light brown coating of soy sauce, decorated by scattered pieces of

shrimps and crab meat. The first bite I had was full of fried rice and meat. I know it seems like a

cliché, but the only word I could think of to comment on the dish was “bravo”! The rice was

flavoured and spiced. Neither was it too oily nor overwhelming, which is a fatal mistake

committed by many chefs. The balance between plainness and seasoning was flawlessly struck.

So mouthwatering were the ingredients that my bowl was quickly emptied. As for the chicken
100

congee, it wasn’t as outstanding as the seafood fried rice. Although it preserved the sweetness of

the chicken, it lacked seasoning, which made it rather plain and tasteless. There were still a host

of scrumptious dishes on the menu, from turnip cakes to stir-fried vegetables, from steamed fish

with ginger to traditional red bean soup. While they may not suit the taste of everyone, they are

certainly worth trying.

Despite the mouthwatering food, the services there weren’t equally praiseworthy. Maybe it was

due to the overcrowded environment. To our disappointment, it took us five minutes just to

summon a waiter. Worse still, he was bad-mannered, looking impatient and annoyed. He even

told us to serve ourselves, which was certainly not anticipated in a high-class and reputable

restaurant. It was probably the only thing that pissed me off. Everything else was satisfactory.

Even though it might seem too pricey (costing about $2000), I would still recommend Dim Sum

One to every foodie in Hong Kong and in the world. Especially for families who love gathering, the

food would certainly not disappoint your picky children!

Good morning, everyone!

As all of you know, our annual school fair will be held between 12 p.m and 4 p.m. on 29th May on our

beloved school campus. In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our school, the theme this year is

“Nostalgia”, which will allow our present students and alumni to reminisce about our glorious history.

Are you guys curious about the details of the activity? Let me tell you straight away. The school fair will

kick off with a heart-stirring quiz game between our Form 5 students and our alumni in the school hall.

Attend the contest and you will understand more about our origin, our evolution from a humble village

college into a cradle grooming talents contributing to Hong Kong as well as our phenomenal achievements

in extra-curricular activities. Want to watch a play? You won’t be disappointed! Our drama club, which is

the defending champion of the Inter-school Drama Competition, will showcase their superb acting skills in

our play called “Inheritance”, in which our old campus during the 1970s will be recreated on the stage and

our spirit of mutual support and incandescent love will be demonstrated.

Sitting in the hall for two hours watching the quiz game and the drama, some of you will surely complain

of rumbling stomach. It’s time for you to savour some delectable refreshments. Thanks to the effort by

the Cooking Club and Home Economics teachers, a makeshift tea restaurant will be built on the school

basketball court, where you can taste the egg tarts and pineapple buns prepared by our students and sip

milk tea as well as coffee made by our teachers. Still not satisfied? You can pamper your eyes through

viewing the outstanding works meticulously prepared by our Visual Arts students on the covered

playground. In these masterpieces, you will marvel at the magnificent comics detailing the old days of our
103

beloved school and vivid portraits featuring our teachers, who have been working painstakingly to

enhance our all-round development.

With a view to ensuring the smooth organization of the school fair, volunteers are now being recruited. No

matter which form you are studying in, you are cordially invited to become the ambassadors welcoming

the guests at the entrance and the corridor, helpers of booths and the hosts of the quiz game as well as the

play. With the pandemic of Covid-19 still threatening Hong Kong, special arrangements have been made.

Implementing the social distancing measures required by the government, we have set a quota of 200

attendees who can visit our campus. In the meantime, the quiz competition and the drama will be

broadcast live on our school website and YouTube. Students who excel in multimedia are now invited to

help out.

As you can see, our school fair is such a meaningful activity especially as we are celebrating our 50th

anniversary. Let’s immerse ourselves in the wonderland of nostalgia on 29th May. Paying only 10 dollars,

you can bring one of your friends or family members to witness the glorious history of our school. Don’t

hesitate and sign up for the event via chriswong@hkbs.edu.hk. Thanks for listening!
