In order to become better at painting details and textures you will need to
practice and practice and practice. The following exercise is designed to help you
identify recurring patterns/ structures that you will see in various object
textures such as holes, bumps, flaps, cracks, etc. There is a template download for
this exercise.
Step 1 Pick some of the following objects to explore in your painting exercises.
Step 2 Find good photo reference from Google or other online resources.
Step 3 Zoom in on your reference - if your image is too small you can try going to
google - images - tools - sizes - and looking for larger images.
Step 4 Draw a few close up studies of your reference to focus on the dimensional
structure of your chosen texture.
Step 5 Pick either a sphere shape or cube shape from the template provided with
this class. If your texture object is more spherical then you�ll learn more to
force it into a cube and vice versa.
Step 6 Take your time and try to recreate the texture in your digital or
traditional painting. If you�re working digitally resist the urge to cheat by color
picking with the eye dropper. You can work on your color/value predicting skills at
the same time which will accelerate your learning curve.
