In vitro alpha-amylase inhibition and in vivo antioxidant potential of Momordica dioica seeds in
streptozotocin-induced oxidative stress in diabetic rats

DOI: 10.1016/j.sjbs.2016.01.010

This study focuses on evaluating the antidiabetic activity of methanolic extract of M. dioica seeds (MEMD)
in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Two types of research designs were observed in the study,
the in vitro or animal research and in vivo or test tube lab research. In the materials and methods, the
plant was extrated by removing the seeds from the collected fresh fruits of M. dioica seeds and dried
under the shade, it was powdered and was subjected to methanol extraction, then the resultant product
was dried until further used. It was then subjected under different materials and methods. I was
astonished by the result since it was concluded that the activity of M. dioica seeds helpfully affects blood
glucose level which may be intervened through its a-amylase inhibitory action.

The cases of people affected with diabetes continue to increase globally due to to some clinical factors
and diabetes remained to be in the top of leadiing cause of death in some countries. In the Philippines, it
is most likely to be a common disease and people can develop diabetes due to obesity, and being
physically inactive. There are many potential factors that may contribute to the increasing rate of people
with diabetes, and the study will help medical proffesionals to further develop the treatment of diabetes to
help increase the effectiveness of the treatment. In the field of pharmacy, in vivo and in vitro relationship
has an application to foresee the pharmacokinetic behavior of drug preparations. The in vivo research
design is also significant in conducting the study since the animal used which is the rat is a better working
model to better understand and treatment of the disease. As a student pharmacist, this study will help us
consider our role in the pharmaceutical industry that is to evaluate more approaches that may lead
improved management in diabetes.

Momordica dioica are utilized as a remedy for diabetes mellitus in India. The extract of Momordica dioica
natural product has been found as a great anti-diabetic activity and can improve management of the
disease. Diabetes is a disease affecting a different age scope of individuals across the world. The
individuals who are diagnosed to have diabetes experience critical wellbeing concerns since the disease
has demonstrated to be the cause for other medical conditions. The α-amylase digest the carbohydrates
and can control the postprandial glucose level in diabetic patients. Repressing the action of these two
enzymes have some control over postprandial hyperglycemia, and diminish the risk of developing
diabetes.
M. dioica seeds affects glucose levels, which might intercede by its capacity to inhibit a-amylase. The
seeds of M. dioica is aresult of antioxidant and free radical scavenging action. In conclusion the treatment
and prevention of the disease has become critical, requiring brief activity of people and society.Through
collecting, gathering, and thorough reflecting the informations in the study, I have concluded that the
study is very helpful to medical professionals in health and pharmaceutical industry since it was
concluded that the antioxidant activity of M. dioica seeds that results in its anti-diabetic activity and it is
beneficial to future researchers since this can be a source of new theory. Overall, the study was well-
organized and can be helpful in evaluating more source that can lead to a better future pharmacy
practice.
