INTRODUCTION

The Problem and Its Setting

This chapter introduces the study conducted by the proponents. Introduction,

Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem, Objectives of the Study,

Significance of the Study, Scopes and Limitation and Time and Location.

Background of the Study

At present, many people suffer from their illness or disease, but because of lack of

money they cannot go to large hospitals to buy a medicine for their illness, and that’s the

cause of great health problem. Not all times we need to go to hospitals immediately to

treat our illness. There are herbs that are commonly used by our ancestors and that is the

thing we need to know about them because it helps us to improve our illness just like the

leaves of a guava, the leaves of a guava can heal a wound and the other one is the leaves

of a lagundi that can help us to cure cough and fever. Health is very important to us, so

we should appreciate it.

Banana peel ( Musa Balbisiana ) is a wild type species of banana native to eastern

Southeast Asia, Northern Southeast Asia, and Southern China. It is one of the ancestors

of modern cultivated bananas, along with Musa Acuminata. It was first scientifically

described in 1820 by the Italian botanist Luigi Aloysius Colla. It grows lush leaves in

clumps with a more upright habit than most cultivated bananas. Flowers grow in

inflorescenes coloured red to maroon. The fruit are between blue and green. They are

considered inedible because of the seeds they contain. It may be assumed that wild

bananas were cooked and eaten or agriculturalists would not have developed the

cultivated banana. Seeded Musa Balbisiana fruit are called butuhan (‘ with seeds’) in the

Philippines and kluaitani in Thailand. Natural parthenocarpic clones occur through

polyploidy and produce edible bananas, examples of which are wild saba bananas.

I conducted a research about Musa Balbisiana or the peel of a banana it is because

for us it does not matter after we eat its flesh, but actually, it’s worth it. Did you know

that Musa Balbisiana can be a cure for Diabetes. Some people think that it is useless but it

have a great help to us people who have Diabetes.

According to the report of World Health Organization (WHO) , about 374 million

people suffer from diabetes worldwide. I want to help this people by the help of my

Page | 2
study. After cancer and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes has become pandemic to

mankind due to its high prevalence, morbidity and mortality.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to prove scientifically the folkloric use in addition of

my new discovery great for the eyes, it hydrates, prevents infection, healthy heart, and

manage diabetes effects of peel of a banana ( Musa Balbisiana ).

Objectives of the Study

 To determine the chemical composition of Musa Balbisiana.

 To determine the Anti-diabetic potential of Musa Balbisiana.

 To be able to know the significant difference.

Hypothesis

( ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS )

During our ancestors time they used the peel of banana to remove skin warts, this

problem can be solved with a banana peel. Not only will you remove them with it, but

also will prevent their occurrence in the future. Also it is used to remove the sore spots on

the body only just rub it. It is an excellent way for the pain.

Page | 3
Musa Balbisiana has a positive result as an Anti-diabetic medicine because by the

help of the pectin, lignin, and hemicellulose which shows reduction in blood glucose

levels. Another one is pectin, by the help of potassium and sodium that controls the blood

pressure. Banana peel has also pyridoxine that is important for releasing stored glucose

and synthesizing neurochemicals.

( NULL HYPOTHESIS )

Some people said that banana peel has no Anti-diabetic potential but they have not

enough prove and research about it.

Significance of the Study

The rationale of the study is to save more money, effort and time. And in the other

side, this study aims to produce a product that will help other people to prevent other

diseases or illness such as diabetes by the help of “ Peel of a Banana”. Hence this will

benefit other people who have problem in diabetes. The researcher finds the way to study

banana peel with the aim to eradicate foul odor out of discarded waste banana peel in the

environment. Also to educate people of my community the importance of Banana Peel in

their health as well as the medicinal importance of it.

Scopes and Limitation

This study was conducted to Pigcawayan National High School and Musa

Balbisiana is limited only to use as the medicine to help other people overcome the

problem in diabetes.

The study focuses only in investigating the potential of Banana Peel as an Anti-

diabetes medicine.

Time and Location

This study was conducted at Poblacion 1, Pigcawayan, Cotabato. The experiment

was conducted at Pigcawayan National High School laboratory.

Review of Related Literature

I wanted to study Musa Balbisiana it is because I wanted to help other people

about my study and also it is much easier to find aside from any herbal plants around us.

Banana peel is very common to our surroundings. Banana peel is known by its

local and traditional use to promote wound healing, mainly from burns and to help

overcome or prevent a substantial number illness, as depression.

Phytochemicals:

Folklove studies revealed that Musa Balbisiana (MB), has high medical properties.

Peels are developed by the fruit to prevent microbial infections and other harms. This

means that peels of fruit of banana have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to attack

deadly microbes. Banana peels contains (100g/mg) calcium, sodium, iron and manganese

were 19.20, 24.30, 0.61 and 16.20 respectively. Iron carries oxygen to the cells and

necessary for the production of energy. Banana peel has low concentration and it will be

idyllic source of iron since its excess is implicated in abnormal functioning of the

Page | 6
immune system. Manganese know to aid formation of skeletal was also found to be high

(76.20mg/100g).

The content of protein, lipid, carbohydrates and crude fiber was found to be 0.9%,

1.7%, 59% and 31.70%. This values indicate that the peels could be a good source of

carbohydrates and fiber. The high fiber also indicates that the peels could treat

constipation and improve general health and well being. Recomemded (18.32g) per day.

Also, banana peel has a complete nutrition such as protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron,

vitamin B, vitamin C and water. From the review it was suggested that banana peel

contained large amount of dopamine and L-dopa, catecholamines with an antioxidant

activity. The banana pee also shown the ability as antioxidants to prevent the oxidation of

fish oil and might be considered as rich sources of natured antioxidant.

Methodology

This chapter presents the methods of research design, procedure, materials and

statistical analysis.

Research Design:

This study entitled “ Musa Balbisiana as Ant-diabetes” it is an life research that

aims to solve problem in diabetes. It is an experimental research type is conducted in the

study.

The experimental research method we will employed in this study for is to aim and

to know the potential use of banana peel.

Data Gathering Procedure

Experimentation was the main tool use to gather all data. It was conducted

between two variables namely Banana Peel “ Musa Balbisiana” the independent variable

and the efficacy of the anti-diabetes as the dependent variable.

Page | 8
Locale of the Study

This study is conducted at Pigcawayan National High School with the supervision

of the research adviser. This was intended to be done at Science Laboratory because this

institution is equipped with facilities and laboratory equipment that are neede in the

research study.

3.1.1 Collection of samples, Time and Duration.

Banana Peel (Musa Balbisiana) were collected at the Pigcawayan Public Market,

Pigcawayan, Cotabato. The mice for testing were bought at the animal center store of

Pigcawayan, Cotabato.

Laboratory Animals

Healthy adult male albino mice, 2-3 weeks old and 40 to 50 grams in weight were

used in the study. The animals were fed with standard mice pellets obtain from the feeds

store and water.

Experimental Design

Induction of Diabetes

The following groups of mice were used for experimets:

 Group 1, normal untreated mice ( control)

 Group 2, diabetic mice was administered with 500mg metformin

 Group 3, diabetic mice treated with 50mg of Banana Peel

The fasting blood glucose were determined by the use of glucose analyzer

model with glucometer strips after seven days. Rats having blood glucose level

above 93mg/dl were used for the study.

Diabetic mice were divided in three groups; each group comprised of six

rats.

Test for Anti-diabetes

The treatments were orally given once a day after 7 days. The blood

sampling was done by cutting a small portion of the mice tip tail using surgical

scissors. Blood extracts were collected using the strips and it was inserted in the

glucometer to know the total blood sugar level.

Page | 10
Data Analysis

The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to determine whether there are

any statistically significant differences between the means of two or more

independent groups.
