Unexpected, yet often welcomed with a smile.

The pairs of words such as unexpected-welcomed and glad-sad are

antonyms while fast-lively are synonyms. These are some of the
relationships expressed by analogies. That is the focus of this module. So
come on, and let’s find out more about it.

In this part of the module, you will learn about the key concepts
of simple analogy and the types of relationships it expresses. Are you
ready? Let’s begin.

This is Good to Know

An analogy is a comparison of two unlike things on the basis of their
structure and for the purpose of explanation and clarification. It compares
two things that are mostly different from each other.
Writers use analogy to relate unfamiliar words with common and
familiar objects. It provides a description or explanation of one thing by
analyzing its similarities and differences and allows the readers to
understand a relationship between them.
Analogies help you enhance your vocabulary skills through
understanding word relationships and allow you to develop critical thinking
skills by analyzing word structures.

There are two versions of an analogy.

1. Sentence/Longer version in which the relationship of words is
expressed by using the expressions is to and as.
2. Shortened version in which the expression is to is replaced by a
colon (:) and as by two colons (::).
Sentence/Longer Version Fork is to eat as pen is to write.
Shortened Version Fork : eat :: pen : write
In an analogy, you determine the common relationship between each
pair and what term makes up each pair. The following are the different
types of relationships expressed by analogies.

1. Synonym – the relationship between words is established according to

similarities in relation to appearance, quality, and meaning
Examples:
find : discover :: begin : start
small : tiny :: beautiful : pretty

2. Antonym – the relationship of words is established according to

differences in relation to appearance, quality, and meaning
Examples:
fast : slow :: wet :dry
hot : cold :: day : night

terms that refer to the source of some action or condition and its result
Examples:
fatigue : yawn :: itch : scratching
thirsty : drink :: hungry : eat

refer to an object and the specific location where it is found
Examples:
money : bank :: goods : grocery
teacher : school :: doctor : hospital
6. Characteristics Quality – the relationship of words is established
between words that express quality or characteristic
Examples:
mirror : smooth :: sandpaper : rough
grape : purple :: apple : red

7. Degree – the relationship between words refers to a greater or a lesser

intensity
Examples:
hot : burning :: cold : freezing
giggle : laugh :: whimper : cry

8. Function – the relationship between words refers an object and its

function or purpose
Examples:
knife : cut :: shovel : dig
pencil : write :: eraser : erase

9. Performer and Action – the relationship of words refers to the doer

and the action performed
Example:
actor : act :: singer : sing
chef : cook :: author : write

10. Performer and Object – the relationship of words refers to the doer
and the object being acted upon

11. Object and Action – the relationship of words refers the action and
the object being acted upon
Examples:
money : spend :: food :eat

geographical location
