What’s In

Do you know what a jazz chant is?

A jazz chant is a singsong intonation in a speech. It is a rhythmic expression
set to a particular tempo or beat which is established by counting, clapping, using
rhythmic sticks, snapping of the fingers, or stamping the feet. It is a tool to develop
the students’ appreciation of rhythm and intonation patterns of English. The primary
purpose of jazz chanting is for the improvement of speaking and listening
comprehension skills.
Read the jazz chant below with proper expressions. Then, answer the
questions after it.

What Did You Say

by Marites Sigue-Sena

What did you say?

What did you say?
I said, “Book rhymes with crook,
just as bruise rhymes with cruise.”
Book is to crook as bruise is to cruise.
Can you read a book?
Can you cure a bruise?
Yes, we can.
Yes, we can.
We can read a book.
And we can cure a bruise.
Can you read a book?
Can you cure a bruise?
Yes, we can.
Yes, we can.
We can read a book.
And we can cure a bruise.

What did you say?

What did you say?
I said, “A book is found in the library,
just as a seedling is found in the nursery.”
Book is to library as seedling is to nursery.
Do you always go to the library?
Do you also plant a tree?
Yes, we do.
Yes, we do.
We always go to the library.
And we always plant a tree.

Process Questions:
- As stated in the chant, how is a book related to a crook? How is a bruise
related to a cruise?
- Can you give sample pairs with the same relationship? Write these on your
paper.
- Find another analogy from the chant. What type of analogy is it?
- How often do you go to the library? Why is it important to plant a tree?

What’s New

Answering verbal analogy exercises measures one’s reasoning ability. Like

getting the meanings of unknown words though lexical and contextual clues, these
exercises will enrich your understanding of word relationships. Words or expressions
that complete an analogy depend on the relationship the pair of words convey.

All analogies consist of four parts which bear a relationship with one another.

To complete an analogy accurately, remember the following tips:

1. Read the analogy as a sentence.

2. Determine the relationship between the pair of words.
3. You may also ask questions like: Does the second word describe the first
word? Do the words in the pair have the same meaning?, etc.
4. Take note of the commonly used types of relationships which can be:
a. synonym as in precise: exact
b. antonym as in wild : domestic
c. part of the whole as in keyboard : computer
d. characteristic/quality as in hair : wavy
e. classification as in whale : vertebrate
f. cause/effect as in earthquake : fissure
g. function as in ruler : measure
h. degree as in warm : hot
i. location as in machine : factory
j. performer/action as in thief : steal
k. performer/object as in magician : wand
l. action/object as in segregate : trash
