Novi Sad is the capital of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina and the administrative
center of the South Bačka District. It’s second largest city in Serbia.

History and cultural sites of Novi Sad

Novi Sad was founded in 1694 when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from
the Petrovaradin Fortress and was named Petrovaradinski Šanac. Since its founding, the population of
the city has been constantly increasing. As ethnicaly most diverse city in the region, it is situated in the
southern part of the Pannonian Plain, on the border of the Backa and Srem geographical regions, on the
banks of the Danube river, facing the northern slopes of Fruska Gora mountain. The city boasts many
culturally important places, such as the Petrovaradin Fortress witch is built in the 17th century.The
fortress that no enemy has ever taken through centuries, also has a small Observatory and Planetarium.
In fact, in 1991, Petrovaradin Fortress was added to Spatial Cultural-Historical Units of Great Importance
list. The"Reversed clock" as it is known, is one
of the trademarks of the fortress as well as the
city itself. What is notable to mention, along so
many things in this city, is Zmaj Jovina Street,
one of the oldest streets in Novi Sad. It extends
from Liberty Square to the bishop's palace and
it used to be a place with a number of craft and
trade shops, named Magazinska alley. City’s
natural landscape and numerous galleries,
museums and monasteries make it one of the
most popular destination in Region.

Present time

Today, the second largest city in Serbia is a city of multiculturalism, education, and uniqueness,
it’s home for 26 nationalitys with over
370000 citizens,the city gains a status of
the industrial and financial center of the
Serbian economy.

The University of Novi Sad have more


then 50,000 students and 5,000
employees, and it’s one of the largest
research and educational centers in
Central Europe.The University of Novi Sad offers around 400 accredited study programs at the level of
Bachelor, Master, Specialist and Doctoral studies, carried out at its Faculties.

Novi Sad is home to one of


Europe’s largest music festivals
EXIT, which is already 19 years
old. Also there’s some other
festivals such as International Novi
Sad Literature Festival, the Novi
Sad Jazz Festival, etc.

On the summer of 2019, Novi Sad


hosted two IEEE events, EUROCON
2019 and CEuSYP 2019.

Novi Sad is also selected as European Youth Capital for 2019, as well as European Capital of Culture for
2021.

How to get to Novi Sad

Novi Sad is in the vicinity of the most significant directions which lead to the 4 directions of
Europe. Those routes are the E-75 from north and middle Europe and E-70 from the west, which lead to
the south and southeast of the continent.

The closest to Novi Sad is the “Nikola Tesla “ airport in Belgrade 80km away. From the airport to Novi
Sad you can take a bus.

The bus station in Novi Sad is both international and intercity. There are departures to many cities in
Europe and all parts of Serbia.

Climate

The climate in Novi Sad crosses over from humid continental to continental. The city has all four
seasons. Air temperature average is 10.9°C. The average temperature in January is –1°C and 21.6°C in
July.
