Unit 3
The Rizal Retraction

Activity 1: Guide Questions

1. Who are the sources of the accounts?

-The tale of Rizal's retraction was based on Jesuit testimony; Fr.
Fr. Balaguer was born in the town of Balaguer, in the province of
Valencia the day before Rizal died or was killed, Pi, Palma, and
Coates, as well as other colonial authorities, paid him a visit and
spoke with him. El Imparcial, Herald de Madrid, and El Siglo
Futuro were among the newspapers and publications in Spain that
covered the retraction.

2. How are they similar to and/or different from one another?

-According to Fr. Fr. Balaguer was born in the town of Balaguer, in
the province of Valencia Between each remark, Pi, Palma, and
Coates express several affirming and negating thoughts that aid in
comprehending Rizal's reversal. Rizal's retraction was confirmed
by both of them. They also only included events that occurred
around the time Rizal is alleged to have retracted his
freemasonry. Both allege that Rizal willingly retracted his masonry
ideas by signing and changing the retraction formula just hours
before his death. The two stories, however, differ in a way that
undermines the assumption that Rizal withdrew.

3. Which among the two priests do you consider the most convincing?
-Rafael Palma's opinion is the most compelling and persuasive of
the two priests; he underlined that Rizal did not do any retraction
or paperwork linked to it. He had produced several evidences to
back his assertion, and they had truly supplied sufficient grounds
to conclude that Rizal had not retracted. One of the most
compelling pieces of evidence he offered was how the friars
treated Rizal after his death, burying him in the ground without a
crucifix or grave markers, and listing him on a unique page in the
book of funerals with special orders of authority.

Reflection

As a part of the Filipino youth sector, how important is the Rizal’s

retraction to you?

-As a youth and as well as a future chef, the Rizal’s retraction

was really important to
me, these contradicting yet enlightening accounts pave the
way for a more understanding of the National Hero’s
presumed retraction. Rizal’s retraction was very important
for he made change and open the eyes of the Filipino in his
times, He is our national hero thus, as a youth I should not
neglect and forget the history of Rizal. For he has
contributed to our motherland. Rizal once said that the
youth is the hope of our motherland. We the youth are the
hope, but the question is to how? Reading the retraction
makes me realize that our life is destined by our actions.
Rizal fight for the rights of the Filipino people with his pen
and learnings thus he was persecuted by the oppressor for
he was a threat to them. He describes his burial and even
thanks his beloved Filipinos, Rizal really has a kindhearted
heart and the young generation should practice or do the
same thing to attain the dreams of Rizal as what his famous
sayings tell. As a result of his pen and learnings, Rizal was
hounded by the oppressor since he was a threat to them.
Rizal has a kindhearted heart, and the next generation
should practice or do the same thing to achieve Rizal's
aspirations, as his renowned sayings reveal.

Reflection
Why is it important for you to know the historic sites and
landmarks in your place?
-For me to understand when our home became what it
is now. Its historical sites and landmarks are crucial in
that they assist me in determining specific locations in
our city where historical sites are located. We may
connect to the past by visiting historical sites. We
discover our roots by traveling to these historical sites.
We might feel a part of something far larger when we
study history. Furthermore, historical landmarks or
locations should be preserved and valued so that
future generations may know what our environment
was like previously. Today, natural disasters have
devastated numerous key historical sites, leaving only
a handful remaining.
