Statement of Purpose:

My name is Saadman Sakib, I am a twenty-three years old student (Date of Birth: November
16th, 1995) who has just completed his undergraduate degree of Bachelors of Business
Administration from BRAC University from Bangladesh. I aim to study in the Master of
Information and Communications Technology program of Western Sydney University of New
South Wales state in Australia. This study will be funded by my family. I have completed my
year 10 and year 12 programs from these following Bangladeshi educational institutions: Udayan
Higher Secondary School & Dhaka City College.
Since the beginning of my educational life, I have always had a knack in finding patterns within
seemingly random subjects. After a while, I had started to discover the intricate relations
between all the subjects that I am studying. With time, this curiosity gradually extended towards
other relevant things surrounding my life and I realized that I really enjoy doing critical thinking.
Thus, I developed a keen interest in analysis.
However, I was struggling to find out the right area of study for me. I found classical scientific
areas too technical and unsuitable for me. So, I took Bachelors of Business Administration
program with a double major in Finance and Marketing for my undergraduate degree. Although I
had faced some challenges switching up fields from my high school where I had a science
background with a focus in higher math till my year 12, it was relatively more comfortable and
interesting for me. Having said that, I was still unsure of my true passion till I come in contact
with introduction to data analysis in my management information systems course. Later this
passion became a job at 2017 when I joined with a couple of friends who were creating an e-
business startup as a marketing analyst. I stayed in that startup for one year and conducted
various marketing research by survey method and ran various customer growth analysis of the
startup’s Facebook page using Facebook insight tool and suggested appropriate course of action
basing on the result of my analysis. Little did I know, it was my first glimpse into the world of
data analytics in information technology. Even without knowing properly back then, I felt a
strong determination to pursue a sector where I can work with data in a broader scope.
This opportunity arrived at the last stage of my undergraduate program, I got into an internship
program in one of the biggest telecom companies in Bangladesh named Banglalink Digital
Communications Limited. I had worked in their business to business product and marketing team
that oversees the strategic operation for the respective marketing division. Since Banglalink is a
very data driven company, I got some very valuable experience in understanding the impact of
data in modern world. I have also met some skilled data scientists who mentored and taught me
the basics of big data analysis. Here for the first time in my life I have felt certain about the area I
excel and enjoy working. I feel that this field has the exact balance of technical and creative
skills that I have been looking for all my educational life. That is why I want to pursue my future
career in data analytics. In order to learn this field properly in a more formal setting. A master’s
degree will help me to achieve this goal.
Unfortunately, in my home country there is no proper master’s program in this field yet. More
specifically, no university exclusively offers master’s in data analytics or any relevant field for
business graduates here. So, studying abroad is my best option. I have chosen Australia to study
because it is world widely renowned for its quality of education. Moreover, I have visited
Australia several times and my experience has been very pleasant. I have also visited university
campus of University of South Australia, University of New South Wales & Western Sydney
University personally and loved their environment. Also, currently I got two sisters living in
Sydney city one of whom is a citizen of Australia and another is doing her post-doctoral
research. So, I will feel more at home studying here since I will get to visit them frequently.
They will also be a big help in helping me to arrange proper accommodation and living options.
In my initial search for a suitable program, I considered three key factors: the program fees need
to match my sponsor’s financial ability to provide properly, the program’s covered topics should
not be too narrowly focused and my confidence in completing the program with good grades.
Although not a primary focus I also wanted to study somewhere close to my sisters to feel more
comfortable. After looking at courses offered at various universities specifically in Victoria and
New South Wales state, I narrowed down my field between Victoria University’s Master of
Business Analytics, Australian Catholic University’s Masters of Commerce with a focus in
Business Information Systems & Western Sydney University’s Information and Communication
Technology with a specialization in Data Analytics.
After doing further research into these universities, I have decided to join Western Sydney
University’s Information and Communications Technology program because it fulfills my above
mentioned three criteria most suitably. Western Sydney University is in the top three percent of
the universities in the world and I believe its quality of education will also match my
expectations. First of all, this program has a pathway designed for non-ICT background students
which is perfect for me and I feel confident fitting well into this program. Secondly, this program
teaches foundational courses at various fields in of IT sectors such as Network technologies,
Systems analysis, Database management systems which will give me a good insight of the
technical aspects of information technology sector that I lack. Business Analytics and Business
Information Systems on the other hand are both focused too narrowly on the business
interpretation of the analysis rather than the technical aspect. As I already have decent exposure
in that area, I would rather have the good grasp of technical aspects. This program gives me this
opportunity perfectly. Thirdly, the program fees are also financially affordable for my sponsor.
Also, Western Sydney University has offered me a scholarship of AUD 7500 which will
furthermore reduce the costs. These reasons have made me to choose Western Sydney above
other universities.
If I pursue this degree I can work at any business intelligence department as an analyst or
business programmer in my country, I can also start working as a marketing analyst or analytics
executive and therefore gradually work myself to a position of business analyst. The starting
salary in these positions from my anecdotal experience is 80000-150000 Bangladeshi Taka per
month (approx. 1500-2500 AUD per month). This range of income is a very good start
considering our job market. Also, the figure will gradually increase depending on my experience
and negotiation skill. Like everywhere in the world big data sector is expanding fast in
Bangladesh and there is a shortage of skilled people in this area due to the lack of adequate
training programs offered by the educational institutes. So, a relevant degree from a reputed
Australian educational institute will be very valuable for me in order to get a good job where I
can have an impact. After completion of my masters I intend to return to Bangladesh and
participate in the building of this new exciting sector armed with newly learned knowledge. I am
particularly interested in working in multi-national companies like Banglalink and notable local
corporates like Pathao who has the reputation of being very data driven.
I am personally committed towards fulfilling my responsibility to my family specially my
parents. As I am the only son of my parents whose sisters are living abroad, I have the sole
responsibility to stay and look after my parents in the home country. If I get to have a well-paid
and meaningful career I will be able to take care of them with ease. I also have the responsibility
to supervise the family land assets and houses in the country so that my parents can take a
breather at the late stage of their life.
To conclude, I believe this opportunity to study in Australia will be a life changing chapter for
me in the sense that it will set me up to be at a position where I can excel and shine at doing what
I want along with accomplishing my duties and responsibilities towards my country and my
family.

**I hereby declare that the information above which has been supplied in support of my student

Saadman Sakib
