Lesson Objectives

1. Describe energy and its various types

2.
3. Distinguish between transverse and longitudinal
waves
4.
Light

• Our eyes and ears help us to make sense of the world around us.
• Eyes use light energy.
• Ears use sound energy
WAVES

Energy is often moved from one place to another by waves. When

we throw a stone into a pond (or when a drop of water falls on the
surface of water) - waves spread out from the splash and soon the
water at the edge of the pond moves as it gets some of the energy
of the splash.
TYPES of WAVES

Transverse and Longitudinal waves

TYPES OF WAVES
• Transverse and Longitudinal waves
TYPES OF
WAVES
• TRANSVERSE waves : The particles move
up and down (perpendicular) to the
direction in which the wave travels. E.g.
light waves.

• LONGITUDINAL waves: The particles
move back and forth (parallel) along the
direction in which the wave travels. E.g.
sound waves.

Transverse Longitudinal

eg Light eg Sound
• Both involve vibrations
• Both transport energy
• Neither transport matter
