GRAMMAR INFORMATION ABOUT WH-QUESTIONS.

Who? What? When? Where? Why? Which? How? Whose? It’s important to know what information these questions are asking for if I want
to know how to best answer them or if I want to know which one to use when I want to ask a question.
1.What is used to ask for information. I can answer these types of questions with an object, idea, or action.
2. When is used to ask about time. I can answer these types of questions with a specific time (10:30 AM) or date (May 2nd); general
periods of time such as tomorrow, yesterday, later, etc.; or with a sequence such as before or after something else.
3. Where is used to ask about a place or position. I can answer these types of questions with a place.
4. Who is used to ask about a person or a group of people. I can answer these types of questions with a name of a person, animal, or
character.
5. Why is used to ask about a reason, purpose, or explanation. I can answer these types of questions with an explanation or reason for
doing something. Often, I can use the phrase “Because…” to answer these types of questions.
6. How is used to ask about condition, quality, or in what way or manner something happens. I can answer these types of questions
with a number or the way in which something happened.
There are different variations of how questions that ask about the amount or price, quantity or number, frequency, distance, duration
or length of time, age, and/or the reason or explanation.
How much - Amount or price (uncountable) / How many - Quantity or number (countable) / How old - Age / How long - Duration or
length of time / How often - Frequency / How far - Distance / How come - Reason or explanation.
7.Which is used to ask about a choice or alternative. I can answer these types of questions by making a choice between objects.
8. Whose is used to ask about possession or who something belongs to. I can answer these types of questions with the name of the
person who is the owner of the object.
It is easier to know how to ask and answer questions when you know what the different questions are used for and what information
they ask for. Knowing these simple rules will help you ask and answer questions more confidently.
