MODULE 2 CHECK IN ACTIVITY

Data Interpretation

Instruction: Analyze the table. What can you say about the relationship between pH and
temperature? Make a graph presentation of the data.

Kw pH
0 0.114 x 10-14 7.47
25 1.008 x 10-14 7.00
50 5.476 x 10-14 6.63
100 51.3 x 10-14 6.14

INTERPRETATION:
Before we begin analyzing the data, it is important to note that the pH of a solution is
determined by the number of Hydrogen ions present in the entire solution. In order to gauge
the acidity of a solution, it has to be an aqueous solution or is mixed with an aqueous solution.

The correlation between the pH level and the temperature of the solution goes back to
the molecular activity of the atoms in the solution. We need to remember 2 main factors:
1. Le Chatelier's Principle states that if there is a change in the conditions of the dynamic
equilibrium, the position of the equilibrium will change in regard to the changes made.
Thus if you heat the solution, it will adjust its equilibrium by absorbing heat thus making
more ions.
2. It is said that molecules are always in a constant motion and in this motion, a small
number of molecules will collide and dissociate or split. For example the H2O(water)
molecule to form: [H+] (Hydrogen Ions) and [OH-](Hydroxide) ions: H2O = H+ + OH-.
This process is called auto-dissociation of water.

The auto-dissociation activity increases as temperature increases thus the pH

decreases as the temperature increases. This is due to the drop in Hydrogen ion
concentration on the solution that was caused by auto-disassociation. The auto-dissociation
causes the solution to contain less hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions hence it will cause a
decrease in the acidity of the solution. This is observable in the graph shown above. As the
solution’s temperature increases to 100, its Kw also increases. With each change in the Kw the
pH also changes this is due to Le Chatelier’s Principle. More heat would be absorbed to lower
the temperature of the solution to maintain the equilibrium and the product caused by the
reaction causes a change in the concentration of hydrogen and hydroxide ions in the solution
therefore affecting its pH level.

However, it is also important to note that a change in temperature would not instantly
mean that the solution’s acidity would increase or decrease. Pure water would still be neutral
even if there is a change in pH brought by temperature change. It is because the number of
hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions are constant. There would only be changes to the acidity if
there is an EXCESS of hydrogen or hydroxide ions.
