//X Section A
• Write the answer of the following questions. [Each carries 2 Marks] [18]
1. 3) An infinite line charge produces a field of 9 ´ 104 N/C at a distance of 2 cm. Calculate the linear
charge density.
1.22)
2. A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4 m diameter has a surface charge density of 80.0
mC/m2.
(a) Find the charge on the sphere.
(b) What is the total electric flux leaving the surface of the sphere ?
3.6) A molecule of a substance has a permanent electric dipole moment of magnitude 10 –29 C m. A mole of
this substance is polarised (at low temperature) by applying a strong electrostatic field of magnitude

IR
106 V m–1. The direction of the field is suddenly changed by an angle of 60º. Estimate the heat released
by the substance in aligning its dipoles along the new direction of the field. For simplicity, assume
100 % polarisation of the sample. 1 mole = 6 ´ 1023 molecules
4. 0) (a) A 900 pF capacitor is charged by 100 V battery (From figure (a)). How much electrostatic
NS
energy is stored by the capacitor ? (b) The capacitor is disconnected from the battery and
connected to another 900 pF capacitor (From figure (b)). What is the electrostatic energy stored
by the system ?

5. ) Three capacitors of capacitances 2 pF, 3 pF and 4 pF are connected in parallel.

(a) What is the total capacitance of the combination ?

(b) Determine the charge on each capacitor if the combination is connected to a 100 V supply.
6. ) In a parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates each plate has an area of 6 ´ 10–3 m2 and
the distance between the plates is 3 mm. Calculate the capacitance of the capacitor. If this capacitor
is connected to a 100 V supply, what is the charge on each plate of the capacitor ?
3.3)
7. An electric toaster uses nichrome for its heating element. When a negligibly small current passes
through it, its resistance at room temperature (27.0 °C) is found to be 75.3 W. When the toaster
is connected to a 230 V supply, the current settles, after a few seconds, to a steady value of 2.68 A.
What is the steady temperature of the nichrome element ? The temperature coefficient of
resistance of nichrome averaged over the temperature range involved, is 1.70 ´ 10–4 °C–1.
8. Obtain the formula for the effective capacitance of the series combination of different n capacitors.
9. What is parallel plate capacitor ? Obtain the formula for the capacitance of such a parallel plate
capacitor and on which factors does the value of capacitance depend ?

Ze, surrounded by a uniform density of negative charge up to a radius R. The atom as a whole
is neutral. For this model, what is the electric field at a distance r from the nucleus ?
3.5) A network of resistors is connected to a 16 V battery with internal resistance of 1 W, as shown in
11.
figure. (a) Compute the equivalent resistance of the network. (b) Obtain the current in each
resistor. (c) Obtain the voltage drops VAB, VBC and VCD.
