Cell Potential

Lecture -5
• The cell membrane consists of a phospho-lipid
bilayer that is semipermeable
• The membrane, will have proteins on it which
interact with other cells.
Membrane Potential
What is the cause of this potential difference??
Why membrane potential is negative???
Components of Cell membrane
The lipid bilayer membrane that surrounds a neuron is semipermeable to
charged molecules or ions.

Potassium leakage Channels
Resting potential
• Sodium potassium pump and potassium
leakage channels are the 2 proteins
responsible to setup the resting potential of
the cell.
• They also maintains the potential inside the
cell
• Cell is more positive outside and more
negative inside
