ONE LAMP CONTROLLED BY ONE SWITCH

Aim

To wire up the circuit for one lamp controlled by one switch as per the given layout.

Tools and accessories required:

1 way switch, 1 way junction box, PVC conduits, connecting wires, fuse, lamp, lamp holder, wire
stripper, line tester, insulation tape and test board circuit.

Wiring layout & Condition:

Switch Lamp

OFF OFF

ON BRIGHT

Test board connection:

Procedure

1. Fix the conduits and the junction boxes on the work board as per the wiring layout.
2. Lay down the wires through the conduits as per the wiring diagram.
3. By connecting a series test lamp circuit check whether there is an open circuit or short circuit.

Testing Procedure

1. Connect the test board lamp in series with the circuit lamp by keeping the test lamp switch
open (OFF) and circuit lamp switch closed (ON).
2. The power rating of the lamp in the test board and in the wiring circuit should have same
wattage.
3. If there is an open circuit then both the lamps will not glow.
4. If there is a short circuit only the test board lamp will glow brighter and the circuit lamp will
not glow
5. When there is no fault in the circuit then both the lamps will glow with equally dim.
6. After testing the circuit, close the test lamp switch, then operate the wiring circuit verify the
conditions.

CASE 3 : SHORT CIRCUIT

CASE 4 : OPEN CIRCUIT

RESULT:
19EEE181Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering Lab

CASE-1:

When we turn on the switch, the current flows through the wires and make
the bulb to GLOW.

CASE-2:

A test lamp is added to this case and a extra switch. As soon as we

turn switch on the both test lamp and circuit lamp GLOWS.

CASE-3:

As the two wires were attached to each other the circuit lamp
DOESN’T GLOW due to short circuit.

CASE-4:

The wire connecting between the test lamp and circuit lamp is
removed the circuit is incomplete so bulb DOESN’T GLOW.

INFERENCE:

CASE 1:

The two wires Neutral wire and Phase wire are connected to the
bulb respectively to their terminals through switch. As we turn on the
switch the switch allows the flow of current through phase wire ,makes the
bulb glow and flow back through neutral wire. If we turn the switch off the
flow of current is stopped so the bulb doesn’t glow.

CASE-2;

A test lamp is connected in series to circuit lamp. As we turn on

the switch the current flows through the phase wire and through test lamp
makes the circuit lamp glow. Even though a new switch is added to the
circuit we should make sure the switch is turned off.

CASE-3:

The circuit lamp doesn’t glow in this case because the neutral wire
and phase wire are attached to each other the short circuit is caused. In
the case of short circuit the circuit lamp doesn’t glow and the test lamp
glows. As the current passes through the low resistance path the current
won’t flow through the circuit lamp.

CASE-4:

The circuit bulb doesn’t glow as the wire connecting through the
test lamp and circuit lamp is removed. As the circuit is incomplete the
current couldn’t flow through the complete circuit the circuit lamp doesn’t
glow.
