TOPIC: Nature of Inquiry and Research
Week 1 Lesson 1
I.OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the learners CAN…
1. define the term quantitative research by:
1.1 showing examples or by identifying situations.

II.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

2.1 Summary of Essential Concepts

Quantitative research is a systematic and organized investigation to seek solutions to
problems by obtaining numerical data and testing the relationship of variables using statistical
techniques (Pulmones, 2016).
Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be
used to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize
results to wider populations (Bhandari, 2020).
2.2 Testing of Knowledge

You may answer the following questions:

1. Based on the definitions of quantitative research given by the authors,
identify two common terms found in it?
1.1
Numerical Data – Numerical Data is a common terminology that can be found in
quantitative research design. Quantitative research design deals with numerical data based on
the findings or results of the problem.
1.2
Systematic/Process – Quantitative research design follows a methodical or systematic
process. It follows certain structures to arrive objectively at a specific study.

2. What insights have you learned from the different definitions of quantitative
research?
Based on the definitions of quantitative research given by the authors, both agreed that
quantitative research is about analyzing and obtaining numeral data which follows a certain
process systematically, in order to seek solutions to problems.

2.3 Knowledge Scanning

How does quantitative research differ from qualitative research?

Quantitative research design focus on numerical data, logic, and systematic process.
While Qualitative research design relies more on literary or textual data.

2.4 Integration of Learning

Based on your understanding, how would you apply quantitative research in your
respective strands? As a student of Humanities and Social Sciences, quantitative research is
one of the tools for me to understand humans and society from a wider perspective. It is one of
the ways for me to understand how these different variables that exist in our world can
correlate to each other, and to discover facts about social phenomena.
III.SELF-DETERMINING PRACTICES

Instructions: Identify the following situations by writing the word quantitative or

qualitative on the space provided for.
Qualitative 1. A teacher conducts a survey of all students about their food preferences for
the new school canteen.

Qualitative 2. A researcher interviews a principal to find out the joys, challenges, and
triumphs of running a rural school.
Quantitative

3.The researcher believes that the world is complex and that no single variable or number can
accurately describe it.
Quantitative 4.

An engineer wanted to test his idea on a new bridge model and test the scale model of the
bridge to detect flaws in his design.
Quantitative 5.
The researcher believes that the world is an objective reality governed by the laws of nature
that can be understood and measured.
Quantitative 6. The researcher wanted to find out the impact of Alternative Work
Arrangements on the productivity level of Teachers.

Qualitative 7. The student-researcher attempts to find out students’ experiences on

Blended learning.

Quantitative 8. The teacher wanted to prove the relationship between work performance and
satisfaction of teachers.

Quantitative 9. The teachers wanted to ascertain the effectiveness of online teaching on

students’ academic achievement.

Quantitative 10. The teacher works on research that determines the predictive value of
vocabulary proficiency on the reading comprehension skills of the students.

IV.REFLECTION/ACTION

How do your knowledge and skills in quantitative research help in your academic
subjects?

At the end of the lesson, the learners can describe the characteristics of quantitative
research

II. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

2.1Summary of Essential Concepts

Quantitative research deals with numbers, logic, and an objective stance. Qualitative
research focuses on numeric and unchanging data and detailed, convergent reasoning rather
than divergent reasoning (i.e., generation of a variety of ideas about a research problem in a
spontaneous, free-flowing manner.
The main characteristics of quantitative research are as follows:
1.The data are usually gathered using a structured research instrument.
2.The results are based on a larger sample size that is representative of the population.
3.The research study can usually be replicated or repeated given its high reliability.
4.Researcher has clearly defined a research question to which objective answers are sought.
5. All aspects of the study are carefully designed before data are collected.
6.Data are in the form of numbers and statistics, often arranged in tables, charts, figures, or other
non-textual forms.
7.Project can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future results, or investigate
causal relationships.
8. Researcher uses tools, such as questionnaires or computer software, to collect numerical data.
2.2 Testing fofor Knowledge (Short activity around 3-5 items)

Instructions: Classify the statements into quantitative and qualitative research by writing
them on the appropriate column.
Quantitative 1. Results can be generalized to the population of the study.
Qualitative 2. Use texts to answer research problems.
Quantitative 3. Employ survey questionnaire to gather data
Qualitative 4. Use interviews
Quantitative 5. Utilize statistics in analyzing data
Qualitative 6. The physical reality is understood from the perspective or stories of the
participants.
Qualitative 7. Data can be objectively and reliably drawn from a sample and accurately
reflect reality
Quantitative 8. Predict and establish relationships, and generalize findings
Qualitative 9. Small, purposive and context-specific
10.Randomized and controlled for extraneous variables.
11. Large samples are usually needed to represent the population
12.Include document collection, participant observation, unstructured and formal
interviews and FGD
13.Uses questionnaires, experimentation, and use of existing data
14.Specific , testable and stated at the onset of the study
15. Is objective, impartial and detached
16. Hypothesis is tentative and evolves during the course of the study
17. Deliberately interacts with participants in a personal way
18. Structured, predetermined, formal and inflexible
19. Free to use intuition and judgment as bases for deciding how to frame questions
20. The world or physical reality is explained by the laws of nature and science.
