Passing the tier

1. You are aware of this game. It consists of a group standing in a circle with their hands held. They have
to pass a tyre through which their hands have been held. This has to be done without leaving the hands
or letting the tyre touch the ground.

2. You can add variations to it like passing the tire blindfolded or having the people standing facing inwards
and outward alternatively.

Telling their names

1. The participants can stand in a circle. The first one tells his name. The second one tells the name of the
first one and his name. The third one tells the name of the first two in proper sequence followed by his
name and so on. The one who forgets gets to do a task like singing or dancing.

2. After this, let them continue to stand in a circle and give them a ball. Each person has to take the name
of a person in the group and throw the ball at that person. If the name is wrong, the thrower gets a
penalty.

3. Shuffle them after everyone has given their names. Ask one person from the group to tell everyone’s
names.

4. Let each person find out the meaning of his / her name and explain it. Conversely let each person choose
what alternative name would best describe him / her according to one’s personality and explain why.

Making groups

1. Break them up into groups. Let each group select a name, logo and slogan. Let one of them describe
the logo and what it stands for and also how they plan to live up to the slogan / motto that they have
selected for themselves.

2. If the institution has certain values, each group can be given one value and asked to find a picture that
perfectly demonstrates that value and explain. For example in HILTON the values were:-

Hospitality, Integrity, Loyalty, Teamwork, Ownership, Now

We did a similar exercise there.

3. These groups can play short games against each other.

If the group has spent a little time together, let each person write in one line about the other people. Just
one line and it should be witty and humorous. They can then read it out. It will evoke a lot of laughs. (Or
maybe a lot of ‘breaking’ other than ice.)
Get each person on the stage one by one (If you have the time). Someone from the audience will narrate
a nursery rhyme or a song. The person on the stage has to do the actions for the lyrics. (Just like we did
actions for the nursery rhymes.)

One line feedback

Ask each person ‘If people are giving feedback about you, what would be the one line (Just one line) that
you would like to hear about yourself.’ OR ‘What is the one line that if you hear about yourself, you will
feel happiest.’ – After the person has said this one line for oneself, you can ask the people to write what
they infer about the person from that line. It can be read out.

Meeting and scenario

Make groups and give task to each of the groups to enact an imaginary scenario e.g. a meeting between
two famous people or a famous event. Insist on making it hilarious. (You will have to take care to avoid
any political, religious or any sensitive references unless you want to make it ‘really memorable’.)

Give the group a topic and they have to narrate an essay on the topic with the following conditions:-

1. Each member says one sentence in a given sequence.

2. First sentence has to start with A, second sentence with B, third with C and so on.

Looking at the mental / grasping level of the group you can add the following variations:-

1. Certain words not to be used. You can select the words according to the topic to make it
interesting and challenging.
2. The next sentence has to start off with the last word of the previous sentence. This would be in
lieu of the letters of the alphabet.

Make it time bound to make it challenging.

Number stamping

(You must have done this one.)

1. Number cards to be stamped.

2. No verbal communication.
3. One card to be stamped by one person only. Penalty if more than one person stamp one card.

This can have variations like:-

a. Odds first
b. Evens first
c. Reverse numbers
d. Table of three or any other number
e. Odds first even reverse

Props

Give them props. Something simple like pencil, pen, chair etc. Ask the group to make a small skit / story
around that prop. (Of course, in the skit / story the pencil will not be a pencil, chair not a chair. Things
should be used as what they are not.)

Role play

Every member to be given a chit with a role to play. Without telling anyone he plays out the role and the
rest have to identify the role being played.
